I can leave mine unattended for 10 hours at a time if I use lump. Probably 15 to 20 if i use briquettes. _________________

With the proper equipment and fuel....Yes, you can leave it unattended for a certain amount of time. Again, depending on equipment and fuel.
I could not let my Pitts & Spitts do that but my FEC-100 and my new Ole Hickory Pit I can.....and it's great!!! |

With the right smoker... yes you can... As long as you have taken care that it will be alright left alone.. Such as, what if an ember falls out and gets blown around etc.
I won't leave one of my trailer rigs unattended, but the WSM is often left alone to do it's job...

I left mine unattended for an entire WEEK.
Then I came home and fired it up and cooked some chicken. _________________ Robin

Check out Cleetis' 4th of July thread, some good stuff there!
If you know your equipment, sure it can be done. _________________ BBQMAN

Exactly, Can you trust your smoker? does it behave itself when you turn your back??
Or do you constantly need to mess with it to get it to behave?
I just walk away from mine and don't worry about a thing! But i got an insulated stumps, with a stoker on it hooked to a wireless router so I can check and adjust my temps from quite a distance on my laptop.
Now if your unit spits out hot embers on your wooden deck on a regular basis, I would not walk away! _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

I can leave mine unattended....but not home alone. WAY too much can happen with fire left by itself. The very least of which is you can ruin perfectly good meat. _________________ Electricity can be dangerous. My nephew tried to stick a penny into a plug. yeah I certainly dont like to leave the house or anything...I normally set my cooker on a concrete block pad in the middle of the yard away from the house, but I still dont like leaving the house with it going...though I do sleep with it going so maybe there isnt much of a difference... |

Duane,
I am with you brother. I love the large BGE. One fill and I can go for around 18 hours. Mind boggling!
Take care,

Yeah, what they said and do you trust your neighbors?
Sometimes I smoke outside my shop, which is in an old mill complex. I put a lock on mine to keep out the curious and the crackheads. There really are not any crackheads here in the mean streets of Providence but just in case. I can catch a few hours of sleep between adding logs.

My old pit I had to feed it every hour or so. My new pit can go around 2.5 hours without needing to be fed. I really love it since I can get some shut eye while doing an overnight cook...... _________________ Slow and low is the way to go......
