Am I the only one that gets burn marks on the forearm for the pull out handle on the grates? Every cook I do I end up with at least 3 new ones, I should take a picture as it looks pretty disturbing.
Anyone else get these? _________________ Alex

I have a few. I try to use a rag to pull the handle out and leave the rag on it until I am ready to close the door.
Hope that helps,

During my first competition with my FAT 50 I was showing all the curious passersby what a Diamond Plate is capable of. As I opened the lids, an onlooker asked if the grates slide out. I replied yes and proceeded to grab the handles bare handed to demonstrate. Totally forgetting that the thermometers were registering 250 degrees...
It's not a burn caused by an incidental rubbing of the handle, but more or less a burn caused by plain stupidity! haha. |

| I usually don't get burned by the grates I pull them out as far as I can and work to put meat on from the sides. Where I usually get burned is from the fire box opening and closing the door especially after it get hot and the metal expands and always on the knuckles...... |

Haven't gotten burned yet. How often you all clean your fatties? I've cooked on mine six or seven times and only washed out insie at carwash (no soap) once. Any suggestions on cleaning? Thinking of drilling a few holes in the snouts this week...anyone done that to even the heat? Love the steamer. Been filling with beer, apple juice, and water...and a little oil. Posted some pics a couple of days ago of a couple of cooks. Still getting the hang of the smoker. THis thing sure does burn alot of sticks!!!But i like the work! _________________ www.fattyshackbbq.com

I usually go over the racks with a wire brush and then hose it out with water (no soap) after each cook. On the way home from comps, I swing by the carwash and power rinse it. Been doing that for around 3 years and it has worked so far.

Ranucci, love the post, just came across it !!! I've left many a skin on the hot grates of my DPP 70. I've recieved all of mine using the grill adder option on the large chamber side trying to reach in between the grates to flip burgers and burning the skin right off the area around my elbow. I've since "out smarted" my DPP by taking out the upper grate while grilling. Oh well, could be worse, could be being burnt by the customer ! |

Bryce, yes, Robert and I have drilled two holes in each of the snouts, at the 10 and 2 positions, at the back wall of the cooker. The holes are about quarter-sized. They even up our temps from front to back nicely. I wasn't worried about being able to even temps up side to side because of the snout dampers that I had Travis build in for me. I can control side to side temps any way I want with those.
And, yes, I do have a bit of a collection of little burn marks on my arms. I haven't grabbed a hot grate and pulled it out with my bare hand, but I've come VERY close. As far as opening and closing the firebox door, get a fireplace poker. The curved part is perfect for grabbing, turning, and closing that latch, not to mention playing in the fire. |
