I used Kingsford brand lump charcoal for my first smoke. Maybe it is just me but it doesn't seem to last very long as far as burn time. It seems to burn up quick.
I have that maybe on my next try I would just regular Kingsford.
any thoughts or suggestions? |

I have used Kingsford briquettes and their lump with satisfactory results with both. I use a WSM and a Bar-B-Chef offset smoker. I have used several brands of lump. Cowboy, Kingsford, Royal Oak, Two Trees, BGE, and a few others. And for me, the consistency of Kingsford briquettes, (not to mention the price) gives me the most bang for the buck. In spite of the mountains of ash!
Just my humble opinion. _________________ Screw the whales, save the Cowboy. |

Maybe it is just me, but it seemed like the temp dropped after about an hour and I had to add more charcoal. |

Kingsford is junk. Way too much ash and chemicals in their products. _________________ KCBS Master Judge |

I like Rancher by Original Charcoal it is a lump hardwood but in a briquette form all natural. I found it for $2.99/20 lb bag at HD this weekend. I think it is normally $4.99 still a good price. It doesn't have much smoke so you can add a few chips of your favorite hardwood. I cooked on it this weekend and it runs warm but real nice little ash. I'll buy some more ... I would have this time but the store only had a few bags left.
Hopefully they will get some more in soon. _________________ DDG

| Maybe I am not using enough fuel, I used two chimneys of lump. 1 lit and 1 unlit and in the firebox. It just seemed to me that after about in a hour and a half it was almost gone and I had to add more. Has anyone else had this same problem? |

What type smoker you using? If it is a large one like my offset that would be near nothing for I can add about a 20 lb bag about every 2 hrs or so now my smaller smokers a bag will do several all day cooks. A WSM I fill the ring almost full then add a chimney of lite. I will add chuncks of wood hourly and about another chimney of unlite lump after about 8 hrs or so. _________________ DDG

I only use lump charcoal.. Cowboy from Lowes.
Secondly, if I'm smoking something that's going to take more than an hour, I'll put a hickory log on it about 45-minutes in.
I'm in TN, so I just go out in the back yard to get my Hickory.

On my WSM I fill the ring with Kingsford almost full then add a little less than a chimney of lit coals. Once it gets going, I add 4-5 fist sized chunks of wood, one time only. I get 15+ hours of 225-250°F heat, with a water pan, although I do need to stir up the coals (to clear the ash) at about the 8-10 hour mark.
