Looking for any tips on who I can contact for smoking wood, particularly Hickory and, oak & red Oak. Right now just getting by through word of mouth however I want to stock up on it.

Example - I live in a thriving community and lots of devlopment going on. should I contact tree trimming companies? Land excavators? Apple orchards?
Any guidance would help.

My Diamond Plate 70 will be ready in a weel or so and need to get smokin wood.

How about a firewood dealer? or a fireplace.woodstove shop that can recommend a firewood dealer to start, then start venturing out on your own

Now, How to measure wood, A full cord is 128 cubic feet in a stack that measure 4 feet deep, 8 feet wide & 4 feet tall.

That is 1 Full cord, A face cord, Fireplace cord, Rick rack load or whatever slang may be used is not a legal unti of measure.

Firewood by law (Weights & measure) must be sold in either full or fractional cords. here is why.

16 inch lengths would make three rows front to back to get your 4 foot deep dimension for a cord.

While 12 inch lengths would require 4 rows, \\

Well some jag-off tries to sell you a face cord, What is a face cord? 1 row of a cord?? ok, 12 inch 0r 16 inch lenghts.

For easy math purposes lets say 1 full cord costs $100.00 a face cord of 12 inch lengths would cost maybe $25.00. if this same wood is cut in 16 inch lengths and a face cord is that same $25.00. you get 1/3 more wood for the same price, right. or on the other hand, ripped off by getting 12 inch lengths when you expected 16 inch pieces.

Basicall make sure you verify full cord cost first,. then ask how much for either a 1/4 cord or 1/3 cord depending on lenght the wood has been cut.

Everyone follow that? PM me if you need more answer's or want to argue.

Trust me...it's not NEARLY as much fun to argue through PMs as it is here out in the open. Laughing Wink

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Make friends with your local tree service. They will often cut the wood to size for you, and the price is usually right too! Offer a trade for some ribs or pulled pork in lieu of money. My guy's are normally happy to give it away- it saves them from paying the dump fee's. Your best bet money wise is to get wood off-season when it's cheap rather than winter time when it is in high demand.

Make sure to allow PLENTY of time for curing- wet wood is no good! Wink

that stack is 0.94 of a full cord. is it split too. I would happily buy 10 cords at that price to stack for the summer. I usually use between 4 & 5 full cords per winter for home heating. and with hickory I could probabaly use 20% less per season.

either way I think that is a very competitive price, what does firewood usually go for by you? per full cord

Here is a link to a cord culculator that I hope you guys can use to figure cost's , prices, and value.

Along with Hickory being my favorite smoking wood, it has the best heat value of almost any domestic firewood.
