|

I just found out some family of mine wants me to do some cookin. I would love to use wood instead of charcoal, but as comfortable as I am on the grill, I don't think I'm ready for wood.
I do use wood chips though and lump coal. A few weeks ago I used Hickory and some Cherry chips..it was nice. But what should I use, the chips or chunks with the regular coal?
By the way, any tips on using wood, logs, whatever would be appreciated too. |

are you grilling, Smoking, Open Pit BBQ?
whatcha doin?
Plenty of times when i did not have charcoal on hand, I would grab a shovel full of coals out of the wood-stove and cook over that.
So if you are grilling, and want to use wood exclusively. start a side fire and use a shovel to get coals into your grill. or start the wood fire in your grill and wait until all the smoke stops so you do not coat your food with the outgassing from the wood. _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

Mr. BBQ:
There are many threads that talk about how to use wood unstead of charcoal in the Chargriller here at the forum for you to check out.
I also have a Chargriller and it is easy to make the switch and the results will be most excellent. I prefer to use apple or cherry wood myself as this is whats available where I live.
I always start off with charcoal to get a good bed of coals then add the split wood to it. Keep the fire box lid open till it catches fire well and away ya go. I like to preheat the wood by placing it on top of the firebox as well, this helps a lot with getting it to ignite quickly. The pieces of wood that I like to use are about 3" by 3" by 12 to 14 inches long. I will add the next piece of wood just before the first one is burnt out to coals.
Here are a couple pix to giveyou an idea of the size of wood I like to use.

| Ok sounds cool, I want to try that. Although I don't get too many logs where I am, so I'll have to go for the wood chunks for now. |

I wouldnt try burning straight wood chunks as that would get aweful expensive. You can use them with charcoal though.
I got to wonder, where is that you live that there are no trees around..? You got to have a fire wood company listed in the phone book where you live. Give a call and see if they have any wood that would be good for BBQ.
It sure is a lot cheaper than buying bags of chips or chunks. _________________ Chargriller Akorn

I stay in Northern California...Bay Area. You know there are some wood companies around...never even thought of that. Thanks for that tip. I think I'm going to go and do the chunks for this Q I'm doing this weekend and then I'll try the log. I'm kinda excited about doing that!
By the way, if anyone is from up in Northern Cali..San Francisco/Bay Area and knows of a place, let me know. |
