I saw this maybe a year or so ago and right now it's really getting popular. I just saw the episode of Throwdown w Bobby Flay and he was facing off against the guy who started it all. Man that pork looked SOOOO good!!
I would like to play around with one of these things myself. Although I've never seen anyone cook anything besides pork in there...no doubt you can cook other things, but I haven't seen it. The other thing too, is I don't think it smokes your food seeing that the coal is on top. I wouldn't mind playing with it though. |

I saw one used at a little competition the end of last year.
He was cooking yardbirds in it when I saw it Friday evening, but then was going to be cooking KCBS butts ribs butts and chicken the next day.
I just got a quick look at the chickens they had really good color, and smelled fantastic, I didn't get to taste any, and I can't remember if they took any ribbons. It was a small contest so they might have. _________________ Here's a change Robert.

I might pick one up for whole hog. The major braw back is no smoke flavor. that is not an issue for alot of things, but BBQ cook offs might be one. _________________ Memories of past exploits: |

Yes, the major drawback is smoke flavor L&H!
My clients love our low and slow smoked pigs. 99% of them are repeat clients, gathering more everyday!
Got a 110 pounder cooking away as I type this for tonight. We have another to do on Sunday.................... _________________ BBQMAN

I have one, and have been cooking chickens in it for 3 years, I still cook all my pork in my smoker. You are right about the No smoke thing, it's a roaster not a smoker. I rub my chickens in EVOL and cover with a Greek spice mixture and all that have eaten them love it. I have the biggest model that the company makes and I have cooked 10 whole chicks at once and believe 12 would fit with no problem. They come out tasting along the lines on the famous "Beer Can" chickens or the slow roasted birds that you see.
But here's the kicker, the way that thing is designed whole chickens (1 or 10) cook in only 1.5 hours and come out so tender, juicy and brown skined they just pull apart.
They list other cooking times at Pork Shoulder 2.5-3 hrs, Whole 40-60lb pig 5-6hrs. |
