I grew up in Midwest City (Dad still lives there) and moved to BA in 94. It's changed so much here in BA in just the few years I've been here -- amazing.
I think this new association sounds great. _________________ Steve

yup...I moved to BA in in 1978..I was only six but....still consider it home. Mom lives in Tulsa. Yes, new association can be a very good thing. Not sure what steps we have to do to take out first steps(well guess we already have) hope we have some doers and not a bunch of talkers. I will contribute any way I can. _________________ Team Diamondback Q

Hey guys,
We are currently in the process of starting the Great Lakes Barbecue Association (GLBBQA) we have had three meetings, drawn up a set of by-laws, and filed our non-profit corporation papers with the State of Michigan($20 in Michigan).
If I can be of any assistance to you, or answer any questions just let me know. I agree with several of the posts here...we likewise are not concentrating just on BBQ, we are not trying to mimmick KCBS, we are going to promote all forms of outdoor cooking, be it, grilling, dutch oven, gassers, wood, charcoal whatever. Most of all to have fun while doing so and share some good times with friends and family.
If you get going and need some help with by-laws, I'd be more than happy to share ours with you. _________________ Good Talkin' With You

I've actually done some preliminary checking and have some potential ideas.
Guess we'll need to figure out what the purpose is first.
Me, it's about BBQ and sharing information and furthering the idea of BBQ. Yup probably includes a few griller's too that don't know what BBQ really is. I don't think being a 'contest' focused group would be as much fun as a information group.
Get 'old mike of a few Guiness' or even a good single malt, THEN we put him in front of people to talk Q.
My preferences:
1. Fun
2. BBQ Knowledge (help Joe Public)
3. More fun (see a trend)
4. ??? |

Wow....I guess I'm more transparent than I thought, or we've hung out enough together you know which switches to throw. Guinness and Michael Collins Single Malt will do the trick every time!
I agree that the main purpose should be getting more people out into the backyard to bbq(and helping them distinguish bbq from grilling). And if it isn't fun...what's the point? _________________ Mike

Here's a balloon to shoot at...
Instead of a contest; and exhibition! Contact MIO and get as many Oklahoma manufactures to bring in their wares. Have Q lessons with (say) three teams that show 1) fire & fuel techniques, 2) fire / temperature control and 3) Preparation, finishing and presentation. (the boring kitchen stuff)
Maybe even have a circuit: Tulsa, OKC, Lawton and Weatherford.
Yea, Yea... Too many R & C's I know.....

I am a member of am Oklahoma and Texas based meat processors association. They have 1 basic membership and from thier have several small avenues to travel. Possible BBQ avenues to travel is basic memberships, business memberships (restaurants and caters owners) vendor memberships (companys that would benifit from exposure to cooks), comp memberships. You don't have to replace a KCBS event just piggy back their scores and use them for a year end points for an annual banquet. Have awards for comps with differant catagorys, vendor awards, dream up a few awards to give away.
Okay lets set a time and date to meet and start getting thoughts together. Where is everyone from so we can have an idea to meet. I'm located in Chandler almost half way between OKC and Tulsa. So where is easy for me. |

| Bixby here.... I think the thought of this is great! ... and the possibilities are endless... A meeting to discuss everything, When and Where? Just a thought here, but, not sure when the next contest is, but there is the Bixby, BBQ and Blues here in May... what about getting together during that time? This will give enough time for the word to get out, for people to put together their list of ideas, and schedule time to go to the event. ... just a thought.... but I am willing to travel just about anywhere to get this started. |

| is there going to be any "downtime" that weekend where we could all get together? not sure how many people are going to be competing that weekend, or how many people will be able to attend? I think maybe we should start another thread strictly for people to respond if they will be able to attend, and we can get a good headcount, and an idea as to how far people will have to travel...... 2.65 per gallon and rising... |

I'm in Broken Arrow and very interested. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the Bixby comp (this was going to be our debut comp for our new team but my step-son is graduating from OU that same weekend). So keep me posted after you have the first meeting. _________________ Steve

Steve,
the weekend of the BB&B was just a date that I suggested, there is no solid date as of yet...
would love to have you there.... but putting another SOONER GRAD into the workforce is far more important!!
I am going to make another thread and everyone can put there date of choice down and we can go from there....
