All,
I am just curious.... I have noticed that there is the FBA (Florida BBQ Association..?) and am wondering if there is, or has anyone thought to create an Oklahoma BBQ Association...? |

Would be interesting. But probably difficult to get away from the KCBS sanctioning here. Although I don't see why we couldn't have 2 here and the event organizer could decide which sactioning body to govern the event. _________________ Steve

I've thought several times over the past couple of years that Oklahoma needs a BBQ association. It wouldn't have to replace KCBS around here, just be in addition to it. _________________ Sa-Mokin Competition Barbeque

Having experiences on a National BBQ board, I too lament the fact we don't have one ourselves.
LOTS of work, who's up for it? |

| all joking aside, I think that the opportunity to establish an OK association would be a monumental task, but with assistance and input from seasoned Q'r's that have been on KCBS competitions, it would be a great additional avenue that all levels of Q'rs could enter without the fear of jumping right into it blindfolded.... It would also expand the number of competitions in the sooner nation, which is WAY COOL!.... |

I agree with you piggin'. I think we (Okies) could all benefit from it in one way or another. I think the filing fee for a non-profit organization with the Secretary of State is $125. The federal and state tax exempt status is a matter of filing the forms and waiting on the acceptance.
However, I have a little doubt if the number of contests would increase with a Oklahoma association. The fee a promoter has to pay for a KCBS contest is only $300 (I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong) and there are a couple of contests that are not happening this year because of "lack of interest". What this boils down to is, every contest I know of around here is to make money for some charity or other entity. The contest funds typically come from entry fees, donations and the "peoples choice" sales. A lot of small towns around don't have any big businesses to donate funds, thus the prize money is not big enough to draw many teams so the entry fee revenues are minimal. And I know in a town like Pawnee, there is simply not enough local people (in the whole town) to generate much income from the people's choice. This results in low overall contest revenues, resulting in... "lack of interest' to hold a contest.
I am not saying that an Oklahoma association is a bad thing at all, I am just not sure it would increase the number of contests a year.
I could help get a association setup but right now I have a full time job, doing a little catering on the side, competing in a few contests and I have a personal project going, so my time is limited. I could help with some of the paperwork filing to get a non-profit business entity setup for the organization if we can get enough interest. I will certainly do what I can to help!
Just my thoughts... Now, with that and a buck you can get a cup of coffee.
Any thoughts from you other guys?

| I agree... but, i think it is like anything else, the greater the interest and exposure, the greater the participation.... maybe i am just spinning my wheels here, but I think it is possible. Not that I am wanting to take the helm on this, but I think I am going to contact some of the other state organizations and gather some good info on the how's and who's in the construction of an association. I think that this would be good, and i urge everyone to invest their thoughts in this, and keep the thread going... |
