I have finally had some time to work on my smoker again, and I have added a folding table for the front, some door latches and a new exhaust
stack on the end.
More pictures to follow. _________________ Keep on Smokin

It was a fuel oil tank that was sitting around in a junk pile for years _________________ Keep on Smokin

| Oh, ok. That must be a snow and ice thing huh? We dont get that round here. I like your pit though. Making a pit out of something that was intended for else is pretty cool. |

Is it safe to use an old oil tank to cook on? There's no baddies left soaked into the metal that will get into the food? I recently converted my house from oil heat to natural gas, so I have a big old oil barrel like that unused right now. I was just gonna haul it off to the dump, but maybe I should hang onto it |

You will likely get responses on both sides on this one..........this is one of those subjects we have touched on numerous times........me personally......I would use a new barrell or one that had held food/grade type stuff like vegetable oil. You might want to check with Alien or BBQMan for the technical lowdown on this one.

Vtbbq,
It is my opinion that those old oil barrels can be used for a cooker, but not to be taken lightly. A person would need do do alot to ensure that you cleaned it out well, especially one that was recently in use.
The one I used was empty for a long time before I got it. I cant say that there is no possible contaminants that comes from them, but I have seen alot of them around. Even on the Competition Circuit. The reserve champion at the KCBS at nelsonville, OH last year was using one. _________________ Keep on Smokin

another outlet for that oil tank if you choose not to use it. instead of paying a recycling center to accept it,......
Find a biodiesel producers forum, we use these tanks alot. I got 2-275 gallon indoor kept fuel oil tanks with no rust on them.
I collect used fryer oil from restaurants and fill one tank with that slop until I need it to make the actual fuel form it. and keep my finished product in the other one ready for use.
I just hate to see a perfect tank get trashed because it is not fit for cooking. _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |
