Hello All,

I'm prepping for this weekend's cook and I'm looking to try something a bit different, and that's usually where I get into trouble. I've read in various places around this great forum that a light coating of prepared yellow mustard does wonders for a Boston Butt, and I would like to give it a try to see for myself. Are you guys using just plane jane prepared yellow mustard from the grocery store, or are some of you going further than that? When you say light coating, how light are we talking? Add the dry rub right over the mustard, correct?

The renowned Mr. Brown recipe (southern succor rub with southern sop mop) from the Smoke & Spice cookbook has been a hit with my family, so I don't want to drift too far from that. I'm hoping that the mustard trick is a good enhancement for this recipe. Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend,

Adam.

The mustard just keeps the rub on the butt better it doesn't add any flavor. I never added mustard to a butt but go ahead give it a whirl.

Everyone will tell you that mustard adds nothing & is used only as a binder...yet they continue to use mustard.

Water will do the same thing.

You can use just enough mustard to smear it around your meat. It seriously doesn't take much.
