Not intending this post / thread to be a whine or rant asd hopefully it won't come across this way. Just info and thankfulness.

I haven't been very active here or BBQing since I moved. here's a big part of the story. I had a CT scan at the beginning of March this year as I was having a lot of abdominal pain and there was concern it might be appendicitis. The scan showed no appendicitis but in one corner of the images a suspicious spot at the bottom of my right lung was found.

Had a nother CT scan specific to my chest that showed greater resolution of the abnormal spot. My primary care physician just wanted to "watch' it always saying "If it was cancer you'd be sicker.". I strongly emphasized my science based background and insisted on a biopsy. Reluctantly, my PCP wrote orders for a biopsy.

I get the standard style biopsy a few weeks later, they took so much sample I had a partially collapsed lung (pneumothorax) for a couple of weeks afterwards. Biopsy results were full of weasel words and inconclusive with the pathologist stating reason was small amount of sample material to examine. Frustrating. Mad

My PCP looks at this and tells me the last thing he wants to do is write orders for a second biopsy - I tell him that's the FIRST thing I want to do. I get a referral to a lung specialist who orders a CT guided biopsy where I' now fully sedated & intubated and they send the biopsy probe down my esophagus. We have to wait until X-rays show my partially collapsed lung has returned to normal.

I have the second biopsy late April and again the pathologist report is inconclusive. Path forward is to have a PET scan and then have robotic assisted VATS surgery to remove the non-functional suspicious area of my lung and biopsy it immediately after removal. If cancerous, then the rest of the lower lobe of my right lung will also be removed during the same operation as well as some lymph nodes before I come out from under anesthesia.

We move to Texas. PET scan is finally done mid-August. Suspicious area lights up slightly still ruled inconclusive but is the only area of my body that lights up.

Sep. 2 I go in for surgery. Turns out the suspicious area is non small cell lung cancer. The lower lobe of my right lung is removed along with multiple lymph nodes. Pathology report on my lymph nodes show they are all clear and there's 0.9 cm clear margin of tissue removed with the tumor. Diagnosis is Stage 1B non small cell lung cancer as it had slightly invaded the lung pleural wall. Radiation is not something for me as it appears to have all been removed, chemotherapy is unlikely for the same reason. However I haven't officially seen an oncologist yet, that's next on the path forward and is in the process of being scheduled. The statistical survival rate for Stage IB NSCLC is only 45% - definitely something to discuss further with a (GOOD) oncologist.

http://www.cancer.org/cancer/lungcancer-non-smallcell/detailedguide/non-small-cell-lung-cancer-survival-rates

I got out of the hospital Sep. 6. My lung slightly collapsed again on Sep. 3 after being transferred from ICU to a standard hospital room that took a while to resolve. I've healed well and received full release to return to all activities on Sep. 15 except for submerging my torso in water (swimming pool, ocean) for now. I have an appointment with my pulmonologist in mid-October where I'll undergo a battery of pulmonary function tests to compare with pre-surgery results. My pulmonologist is also a scuba diver and is confident I'll be able to return to scuba diving at some point.

i'm very happy all things considered with the outcome and post this as a point that one has to be one's own best advocate in today's health care system. I lost a good friend in 2011 to breast cancer who was born within a few weeks of me who had breast lumps her doctor advised to just monitor. By the time they were biopsied she had Stage iV breast cancer with metastasis into her bones, 19 tumors on her liver etc.

It's a load off my mind to have things behind me. I didn't want to give a lot of info out on this until the unknowns were resolved. Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I'm BBQing for our new neighborhood for National Night Out next month - beef brisket & pulled pork.

Good on ya for not accepting status quo....Lung Cancer got my dad in 2001 and my father in law in 2013. If you don't fight for yourself it will be too late.

Wishing you the best!

My father had a routine visit with is doctor in November 1998 for a "cold" that wouldn't go away. The doctor took a chest x-ray and said he saw a "spot" that he wanted to look at further. The spot turned out to be stage 3 non small cell lung cancer. My father passed away in December 2000. Thank goodness you were persistent and caught it early. I wish you a full recovery.

Thanks fellow Ringers for all your thoughts!

I saw the oncologist I chose yesterday. Chemo is an option for me after all since my tumor had invaded the pleural lining around my lung. However there isn't easily correlated statistical data on effectiveness for my cancer stage for lung cancer. I've decided to pursue chemo. If I have a recurrance and skipped chemo at this stage I'd really be kicking my own butt later. It'll be 4 treatments spread out over 3 months. My first treatment is scheduled for Oct. 18.
