Hey Folks. It's been a long time since I've been on. Had to create a new account it's been so long...lol.

So my issue is this. I decided to grab my Chargriller from a friend. Problem...it's been left out in the rain...uncovered. Surprisingly it's not crazy. But the grates are rusty and have that green balls of mold on them. On the bottom there some rust mold and grease. The fire box seemed to be more rusty than everything else. Not to mention the it was the spiders new home..lol. So, what do I do? Junk it? Can it be saved? If so how? Thx for any suggestions!

Welcome back to the ring Bigg Qman. Smile
First thing I would do is rinse out the cooker really well then use a weed burner on the grates and chamber. Once this is done rinse it out again and build a good fire in the firebox and run her up to 300° - 325° and let her dry out. Then re-season the cooker with some spray Pam.
I hope this helps. Very Happy

Thanks K.a.m..appreciate the reply. You know I went and grabbed some sandpaper and rubbed down gently some of the rust spots. I scrapped out most of the junk. Then I did spray it with some oil and then built a fire. My neighbors uncle happened to by and told me this is what he did.

I didn't rinse it out. I swept most of the dust out though. Do you think this way was good? And what's the weed burner do? Just because fire kills everything? Thx bro!

High heat will kill any germs the rinse out washes the crud away.

So I checked the smoker earlier today. I opened it and it smelled like a beautiful Bbq joint...lol. So it looks good so far. I use a bunch of spray oil on it and it cooked in. The ONLY thing that still needs work is grill grates because they are still a little rusty. And the metal sheet and grate in the main chamber that catches everything. That's rusty too. I think I'm ok with that though. Not sure.

On the grates, I would try to get as much surface rust off as possible using a wire brush, pressure washer, or whatever, then give it a good coating of oil and continue on.

I suggest a wire wheel, to use on the backside of this friend you lent the grill to. Smile

When I got my Weber gas grill, I sprayed Pam on the grill grates but I didn't really do what I call a good seasoning, so they've always been semi-non-stick. After several hours of scraping and scrubbing, I've got them back to bare metal and they are now covered in Crisco, wrapped in foil, and baking in the oven for 3 hours.

I did the same thing on my Coleman NXT200 portable folding grill and those grates are shiny!
