Alex, I used VHT 2000 degree paint on both mine, as well as the one my buddy took.

It did well but 2 things - 4 step process to "cure" the paint and you have to be careful with Red. My black paint did really well, white and blue did great on my TX-flag held up well. Red on frankenpit would have held up better had I not painted before the I did the burn out - scorched it pretty bad - still haven't fixed. But the black held up really well, even on the firebox.

KAM - congrats on the comp. (sorry to jack your thread, Alex)

thanks guys for all the help so far. its far enough enough now to get it hot so i did yesterday. the gauges said it all stayed within exact to 5 degrees depending on what i was doing with plates and fire, so very happy with that.

still need to make small digital temp. holders and the "access hole" for the probe. and clean it up for paint. since this is for my backyard probably just black with red hogs.

one problem i created was my door hinge pin position. i placed it right above the top door seam and that made the 2x3/16 seam cover actually pivot down before lifting up and thus i had to grind some which made a less than tight gap. but i dont see smoke coming from there which makes me think i might have a negative pressure created from the exhaust and thus drawing cold air into top of door seam....i will have to pay attention to that as i cook.

all in all i am very happy so far, and so are all my friends that will reap the reward with us. first full tray cook will be for our little church on easter.

again, thanks so far every one.
