One handle will work fine Alex. I prefer using two but a lot of cookers have just one grab handle. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Well it could be the handles or it could be that I can cook good BBQ. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

im thinking its the cooking!!!
question, again,,,,what is the formula for the tuning plate widths? are they even widths? is there a gradual slope relative to the bottom of the heat deflector? and im guessing the last plate stops short of the end about the same area that was cut for the firebox to chamber hole. any other info anyone can share i haven't asked about the inside i would greatly appreciate...plan is to go, go ,go and be cooking friday while i slaughter the new hog for my buddies freezer.
thank you |

I have to agree Kevin...That Debbie can kick out some killer Que, while you man the handles and say "yes dear"
Alexb. your cooker project is coming along nicely On your tuning plates, I normally run my widths in accordance of the length of the chamber. On my 42" backyarder, I have no deflector plate and five 6" tuning plates. On the trailer smoker I just built with a 56" chamber, I had a deflector plate with four 8" tuning plates. I don't think there really is a true formula for the plates, its just what works. I personally would not go less than 6" wide and no more than 10", but that is just my opinion. Run your tuning plates level across the chamber level with the end of your diffuser plate. _________________ X2 Finished Build

Greetings, i was looking at another post and read something about " drip rails " on the doors.. What exactly are those for, condensation?
And do I need them? Also not sure on options for painting other than BBQ black spray paint, what do you guys use? Thanks |

Very nice work Alex.
They keep condensation from running down the door and out onto your chamber. Personally I do not use them on my doors it is a preference thing not a necessary thing.
I prefer the Rustoleum Ultra black over the BBQ black because it has a satin finish. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

If you're wanting to be creative with a color other than black then here's another choice;
http://www.stovepaint.com/
This requires a bit more preparation including using a zinc based primer not to mention it ain't cheap. I don't believe any of their colors have a glossy finish but they do make a clear coat that may gloss it up a bit. I used this stuff on my vertical tank and it's holding up pretty well.
As far as the drip rails, I wish that I had put some in my cooker. Since I didn't paint the cooker black, I get some condensation coming out the door when first warming up the cooker and it shows on the paint. _________________ My current cookers: 80 gallon vertical tank
