Hello.

I'm new to this forum and liked what I saw being that I am a bbqer myself. I've been doing some real basic backyard stuff with nothing fancy just old kettle grills and whatnot. But I decided that I'd like to step up to something more pro I guess so I want to build a insulated vert smoker. I was looking around and I came to see that it isn't as easy as I thought it would be, lol. It's actually kinda technical. I really liked the size and the way I saw the Safe smoker from Pitmaker so thought I'd model mine like it. By the way, what kinda smoker is the Safe? I just started learning about traditional, offset, and reverse flow. So any pointers?

Ragtop, welcome to the Ring. I'm new to this myself so I can't really offer much advice. But there are a lot of great people on here and tons of great info. Someone will be along with tons of knowledge.

Pitmaker makes a good smoker as I've read nothing bad about them. Also, consider looking at the following if an insulated vertical smoker is on your radar.
VDS Smokers
Lone Star Grillz
Assassin
Humphreys Smokers
Stumps
Spicewine
Backwoods
Superior Smokers
Heavy Metal Smokers

No thanks needed for making your decision harder. Very Happy
Honestly you couldn't go wrong with any of them. I have a WSM and except for how much it holds, I have ZERO complaints.

On most vertical insulated smokers the smoke rises up through the cabinet and goes out the exhaust at the top of the chamber.

IIRC, Pitmaker is a reverse flow. Smoke rises up from the burn chamber through channels on the side of the smoker and then is drawn down, top-to-bottom, through the chamber and then out the exhaust from bottom to top.

Ragtop, I dug up this link for you to take a look at. The guy did some top notch fabbing here. I've not seen it in person but I would steal a lot of ideas if I were building a vertical.

We never object to informational links, spam links get blown away, but information is pretty safe.

Awesome information guys! I'm in Los Angeles California so there isn't too many bbq smoker makers. So the pitmaker safe is a reverse flow?

I've never seen one, but from what I can find online, it appears they are reverse flow. The little brother to the Pitmaker Vault, I have seen one of those and it was built like a tank.

That's what I wanted to model mine after. The links that you posted had a lot of really good information and ideas to run with. I kinda like the way the second link build. The first one with the double stack meeting up top looked a little more complicated and more $ to build I'm sure.
