Hi I'm off for 2 weeks in December so I will begin with my offset cooker. It's a 24" x 43" pipe and FB is 19"x19"x19" and I have all the 1/4" plate for the FB.
I need all the rest of the metal so when I start I can give it my all. Keeping in mind that most places will be closed for the December holidays.
I've never built a cooker before and I'm not a metal guy so if I get stuck on the metal work jargon please forgive me.
I've come up with the following metal needed list. Please take a look and let me know if this is right. Also if I've forgotten something let me know also.
Square tubing 2"x 2" x 5/32" for stand as its a backyard cooker
Flat bar for around CC 1 1/2" x 1/8"
Angle iron for grates & rails and rails for the tuning plates to rest on 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/4" ( the same for charcoal basket)
Expanded metal 9# 3/4" flat ( how do I order this as I have no idea what it means )
Tuning plates 6 off 6"x20" X 1/4"
Let me know what you think thanks again for the help _________________ If you try and fail, try again |

Hi Bern, I'm a novice, so I will definately miss some stuff. Is the pipe you are using for your CC an open cylinder? Or a tank? If it's open pipe, you will need steel for the ends, above the FB and around and below the chimney. What are you going to use for the FB door? Are you going to make your own hinges, latches and handles? If so, you will need material for those. Do you have pipe for your chimney? What kind of air intakes are you planning? Drain(s)?
Some of the smaller stuff can wait until you need it as your ideas may change throughout your build. But you will need a FB door and chimney for sure.
3/4 #9 flat is pretty common here in the U.S. I'm sure they have it over there, ask when you are buying the rest of your steel |

Hi thanks for the reply Wango.
I already have the steel for the FB its 1/4" and the same for the door as well as the ends for the CC in 1/4". The stack I have internal diameter 5" pipe. I have sourced some hinges for the FB and CC door. The latches I will have to make some. I have a 2" drain valve and a couple of 2" nipples. I do have the casters already waiting to be used.
The thickness of my materials list would you use the same or would you use thicker steel.
The expanded metal , does the 9# mean the gauge ( thickness) and what is the 3 4 stand for? _________________ If you try and fail, try again |

I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in shortly, but I believe the 3/4 is the "relative" size of the hole that is created when they "expand" the metal. 3/4" _________________ "Never trust a skinny cook."

Looks like you have a pretty good material list BurnBern.
I would add some 1/4" x 1" flat bar this works well for making slides on your intakes as well as anti tipper tops on your grates.
The #9 is the gauge thickness of the material, the 3/4" is the is the short opening of the diamond. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
