Hi guys I'm drawing up tye design for a brick wall pit gradfarthed (Lexington Style). How high would you recommend placing the cooking grate from the coal bed on the floor of the pit? Thank you for any responses.

You need somewhere between 18" - 24" if you are going to use direct heat underneath the grate, if you are going to use a reverse flow or offset design, you can go down to 6" above the tuning plates or rf plate.

When building UDS's they recommend 22", but I've not had problems with the direct heat down to 19", I've not gone taller than 22", but that's because you don't find many taller drums, and I always want enough room for a pork butt on its side!

It's not Lexington Style but the open pit we built is 24" and it works really well.

I just did similar research. Heard everything from 12 to 32 inches. I'm having my rack and top installed next week at 30 inches.
I just finished this pit last week looking forward to Thanksgiving!
