Hi Everyone:
I went to my local Wal-mart to pick up some Royal oak lump today. I picked up (5) 10 lb bags because I seen the sign below it said $3.27 a bag. I thought that was really cheap for the 10 lb bag so the price caught my attention. When I got up to the checkout register, the lady scanned one and it rang up, 5.27 a bag. I stopped her immediately and told her that was not the right price. She acted confused about it not ringing up correct but I stood my ground. I told her that the sign right below the product clearly stated $3.27 a bag so she went and checked. She came back a few minutes later and told me that the tag did say $3.27 right below the 10 lb bag but it was actually for the 5 lb bag. She told me since the tag was right below the 10 lb bag that she had to give me the 10 lb bag for $3.27 a bag. So, in essence I got (5) bags of 10 lb royal oak for $16.35 plus tax. If I would have paid full price, It would have been $26.35 so I basically got two bags for free!! It pays to pay attention when shopping. _________________ KCBS Master Judge |

Last year we had it from February through almost November (though granted it was in limited supplies after August)...........I guess I will just have to talk to the department manager the next time I am there and see what's going on. _________________ Dinger |

Barnburner,
I had the exact same thing happen to me last friday. I bought 5 bags for
$3.27. thats pretty funny that they would make the same mistake in two totally different areas. Must have been an internal goof.

| In Michigan and more of the Midwest you can get Royal Oak Lump. The price is around $7-8 for the 20lb bag. Also they carry evrything you need in paper prodcuts and catering stuff. |

| Last year our local Wally's had it for $8.79 for a 10# bag, I did buy the las 4 bags at the end of the year for $2.50. I just bought 4 bags Friday, and was pleasantly surprised to see it for $4.89 for a 10# bag. Even at $8 a bag it's cheaper than driving 50 miles to a bbq store only to pay $14 for a 10# of lump 'chips'. I'm on my 2nd bag this weekend and have some nice large pieces to cook with |

Actually off the site itself it isn't even offered. What I may have to do is check to see if they will special order it for me because the chain carries it. _________________ Dinger |

i have found the "real Flavor" brand to be a better quality (and american made) than the Royal oak, Royal oak is starting to outsource from south america and use woods we never even heard of. I have been finding lots of rocks in royal oak too at leaat 2-3 pounds of fist sized rocks or concrete.
Stay away from cowboy charcoal too, hard to light, and no flavor out of it and burns cold too. |

Thanks for the recommendation.

If smell/smoke is what you are referring to by flavor, properly carbonized charcoal should have virtually no or negligible smell/smoke at all while burning. |

I really disagree with that. if charcoal has virtually no flavor, then whay do we use it instead of easier to light, cheaper, & cleaner burning gas?
I guess I should clarify. The cowboy brand almost has a light perfume flavor/smell to it. have you ever eaten near someone wearing too much cologne, and you can taste the cologne? That type of taste.
different charcoal brands/ingredients impart different flavors (grilling & smoking) and I do not like the flavor the cowboy imparts. it is tasteless like cooking over gas with a little old-spice mixed in.
For grilling almost everyone uses charcoal to impart a flavor, right. if the fuel does not impart a flavor why not just use gas instead of this stuff? |

Well, I was over at Walmart this weekend and still did not see the Toyal Oak. So, I asked a manager who stated that they would no longer carry Royal Oak lump at that store. Guess it is time to travel to the other Walmarts in the area. _________________ Dinger |

Of the two Walmarts in Lincoln only one carries Royal Oak, and it isnt the one near my house. I happened to be at the "other" walmart the other day and I picked up 4 bags. _________________

That is my hope......I have 2 or 3 other Walmarts within a 20 or so minute drive....so if even 1 of them has it I will be thrilled. _________________ Dinger |

You can get the Royal Oak real cheap here in KS also. I have also found the Best Choice stuff is made by Royal Oak and is even cheaper. The guys up the road about three miles are selling the BC stuff for 2.25 a bag. _________________ Andy
