OK so I can't afford BBQ comps but would lime to try my hand in the comp cooking game and I think I can make a decent chili, does anyone know anywhere a poor Iowa boy can try a chili Cook off that doesn't require membership to some of the society's...if I like it I wouldn't mind joining, thanks for any help _________________ Char Griller ...for now

Not sure how you find the non-sanctioned comps, our town has one September 20th and we vend BBQ during it, the crowd usually eats a lot of BBQ during a chili competition. _________________ Kurt

International Chili Society (ISC) web site has a list.

I highly recommend the Neely's The International Chili Society's Official Chili Cookbook from 1981.
They ARE NOT the incredibly annoying Neely's on The Food Network that know nothing about barbeque. _________________ Pitt's & Spitt's U2436 |

In addition to ICS posted above, I see other events in this area. For example, a local Harley-Davidson dealer does a chili contest in connection with a Open House, and they advertise it in the newspaper. _________________ Pitt's & Spitt's U2436 |

We have a couple events in Huron, SD that I attend each year that fits your (and mine) NO MEMBERSHIP criteria. Around the 1st of June in conjunction with our KCBS event and Wheel Jam (giant auto/truck/bike event), we have a Chili contest AND a backyard BBQ event (pork loin, lamb leg roast, brisket, and turkey breast ARE PROVIDED!).
Also, during the State Fair (just ended), we have a chili contest and a cookoff (this year pork butt was provided).
Great contests that won't break the bank with entry/camping fees.
