Do most of you guys make your own or buy premade potato salad? If you buy premade, where do you get yours that tastes good to you?

We make our own, MRS Tony's tater salad....Havent found anything that comes close! Have tried a few boxed / pre-packaged in the past and people ALWAYS say "its not bad, but its not your usual".....good luck, if you find a really good one, I'd LOVE to know!! The Mrs makes the dressing - I dont even know the recipie other than I buy the ingredients...its to her taste...Which, since she married me, MUST be good Embarassed Wink Confused Cool Cool I lose her, and the tater salad is over Crying or Very sad Laughing Laughing

Hilarious Tony!!! Yeah the wife here makes a pretty good product as well but we were wondering about the store bought stuff. Didn't know if Restaraunt Depot sold any or who does. Btw, nice looking trailer you have on your site. I'm in the market for one. Where'd you have yours built? Pros, cons?

Thanks for your reply.

Here's the link to my search...Its a Freedon Trailer I got thru SLE in Tn http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52747
I would say its a mid-level trailer - good price, good quality - only 15 amp breakers, came with cheap tires, has a few runs in frame and porch paint - but all things I could overlook based on price! I really had no idea what I was looking for, so Cody at SLE was a blessing to help me make decisions! I would do little different now - but a few small changes...and would not hesitate buying another Freedom - 4 years in, and its all good!

We make our own. We used to dice the potatoes but had to figure a faster way to make it when we started selling 15 gallons on a busy catering day. We go through 4 to 5 gallons a day in the restaurant. We use b red potatoes and break them apart by squeezing them until the skin breaks. When we mix the salad they break up nicely. It takes a fraction of the time to make.

If you want to buy some, I like the Sam's stuff.....It's pretty good I think (sold in like 5 or 10 lb. buckets). I have a good recipe that is really simple I like too.

When I was a young lad, I used to work in my cousin's restaurant which is now closed. As qfanatic mentioned, it is time consuming peeling and dicing potatoes, so you can pick and choose how you want to do it. We used to go through about 10 gallons a week, but had probably 20 different homemade salads on our salad bar. There are tools on the market that can help speed up the process. One thing I would suggest is to add the dressing to the potatoes when they are warm, and let the salad marinate for a day or two after making.....The flavors get better.

Here it is:

5lbs. potatoes of your choosing (I like reds or Yukon Golds)
3.25 C Salad Dressing (Miracle Whip)
6.5 T Yellow Mustard
8T Granulated Sugar
6.5 T Sweet Relish
6.5 T Chopped Onion
6.5 T Chopped Celery
8 Hard-Boiled Eggs diced

It is pretty sweet, so if you don't like it that way, cut the salad dressing with some regular Mayo or Sour Cream.

Thanks again...

It actually wasn't bad at all. The customers loved it.

It's the one dish that I buy rather than make.
It seems to be one of those dishes that people want the old standard that they are used to rather than something fancy.
Why spend the time making standard stuff?

I know I am a little late to the party, but I don't have time to get on here as much in the past few months. We (meaning the 'ol lady) make our own tater salad. Like Tony, I lose her, I lose the recipe. Something that makes her life easier, Potato's go through a french fry cutter after cooking al dente. Add the cuts to make cubes. If you like softer taters, put them back in the pot a little longer after cubing. Eggs, same thing. Cut her prep time in half or more.
