Been looking all over, thought you folks may be able to help. I recently got this beautiful steel fire pit (image attached) and hooked it up to NG. It works great and gets plenty warm. Of course, being steel, the exterior wall gets quite hot after awhile. It's great for radiating heat but want to keep the kids safe. There is definitely a bit of space between the interior wall and the exterior wall. Would shoving some ceramic wool up in between provide some insulation to keep the exterior from getting too hot? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

have you considered standoff design personnel protection?

This is for pipe, but the concept can be applied to any shape.

it won't interfere with heat loss to the surrounding environment.

Welcome to the ring jcvaughan, looking forward to seeing some pics of your cooks. Smile
If the bottom is open then I think filling the void with Ceramic insulation is a good idea.
The heat will still radiate around the top and become hot enough to burn you no doubt. A 6" stand off angled slightly up around the upper area like a foot rest would slow someone from touching it.
The stand off would look something like mine.

It looks like your burning more wood than it was meant for, start with lump charcoal and feed oak to it in small chunks. Keep adding till you achieve the heat level desired. Match what you have between amount posted in your picture and what against this test. Children and fire, hell teenagers, do not mix well.

To clarify, small chunks to me are about the size of my size 10 4E feet. Go slow.
