New to forum. Have just acquired a 500 gal propane tank for my first build. I have 1/2inch plate to build the fire box and think I want to make it 40 x 36 x 36 so I can grill on it. Will this be to big? The tank is 41 inch diameter.

Here is a link to a pit calculator you can use. Based on the info given it looks like your firebox would be nearly 35% larger than needed. I don't know how big you could go without having an issue. K.A.M. has a post with his pit build and you could PM him and could probably get some great info.

Welcome to the ring BLAG, looking forward to seeing some pics of your cooks and following your cooker project. Smile
In my opinion the firebox is way over sized.
Will it work? Yes it will.
When you oversize to much it changes the way the cooker drafts but once you learn these changes and the cooker she will perform for you.
Example based on the info given.
500 gall propane tank.
Firebox 40 x 36 x 36
FB/CC opening 414.72 Sq.in

8" exhaust 51.59"

Intake area needed. 155.52 Sq. in.

Now a firebox more in line.
Firebox 34 x 34 x 34
FB/CC opening 314.43 Sq.in

8" exhaust 39.12"

Intake area needed. 117.91 Sq. in.
I hope this helps. Very Happy
