I told Darren at Maverick about my experience with trying to operate my Maverick remote through a sliding glass door and that the signal was intermittant.
He said to take the units outside and seperate the receiver from the sending unit 100 ft apart and see if it works okay. He said if it works okay then it's fine and "we can't do anything for you" If it doesn't work then we will replace it. I set the two units about 75ft apart, more than I usually would ,in line and it worked fine. So I guess if it doesn't go through walls or windows your SOL.
I can still put the receiver outside the window and I still won't have to open the smoker.. It would be nice to have the receiver next to the chair while I'm watching the game... I'll just check it when I go for a beer!
Thought you Maverick owners would like to hear this.

Jon, did you try the mod to your receiver?
I have a couple Taylor remotes and I have problems trying to go in the house and still get a signal. So I opened up the receivers and they both had the antenna wrapped around the internal portion of the body. I notched a place in the body and pulled the antenna wire on the outside of the receiver. Previously, I couldn't get more than 20' inside the house. After the "mod", I was able to go into my house (and walk all around the house), out the front door and down to the curb to get my mail while still carrying the receiver and getting perfect signal.
There have been a couple of threads on this board about the Mavericks. Some of them have an internal antenna and some of them were just completely missing the antenna. _________________ Steve

Steve ,
I haven't tried to modify my unit yet... I just got it and didn't want to void the warranty.

After your experience, it sounds like you got the "taillight warranty" anyway. I'd go ahead and void away. _________________ Mike

Can you fashion a makeshift bracket with suction cups on it so you could mount it to your window. Would that make things easier for ya...? _________________ Hair today, gone tomorrow... |

I own a Taylor with a remote but only one probe. It works pretty well,
Thru the outside wall around a corner or two and thru the bedroom door.
Damn thing wakes me up when signal is lost.
It has lost signal several times, but after replacing batteries it seemed to work better. But the distance is not near 100ft. Works fine from deck to the Lazyboy though. I was going to buy one of those Mavericks, as I like the dual probes. I am having second thoughts now after reading this.
Thanks.
Anyone else experiencing the same with Maverick's?? _________________ Kill a cow, Start a fire ...

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has had problems with these units.
I can't be anymore than 6 ft away from my smoker with one.
They're wayyyyy overrated. I wasted $50.00. _________________ Smokin' it's not just a guy thing! |

AND for $50-$60 price range you shouldn't HAVE to make any modifications.
The darm thing should work as promised. _________________ Smokin' it's not just a guy thing! |

Only being able to get 6' from your cooker kinda takes the fun and romance out of having a remote. |

My maverik works at a range of about50 ft. I leave it by the window but inside the house. It seems to work ok. I wish it worked better so I could put it on the nightstand when I am sleeping. There is a thread on here about the mods. I just haven't had the time to do it yet.

I did the mod and think it is well worth doing if you know what you are doing.
If not, the mavericks are very directional so try lining them up face to face. The higher the better and moving it away from metal may help even more.
the transiter has a keyhole screw mount on the back. Make a wooden mount that will get it up from the metal smoker and get the transmiter more vertical.
May not gain enough but these are simple things to try without taking the back off. _________________ Vertical Brick pit wood burner

Marky -- you probably saw my post that I also have the Taylors. I was experiencing the same problems you do about losing signal (and yes, that sucker is loud and obnoxious when it sounds the alarm). But after I pulled the wire/antenna to the outside of the receiver, that problem seems to have gone away. I can get anywhere in the house and still get great signal. When you open the receiver, you will find the white antenna wire running around the perimeter inside the receiver. It's soldered on one end (to the circuit board) and the other end is just glue-tacked into place. I just used a little screwdriver and pulled the wire out of the glue stuff, notched a place in the plastic body of the receiver and just ran the antenna out that spot. They work great now. _________________ Steve

You are correct.. for the price it should work out of the box and go through windows. What does Maverick think we expect. Isn't the whole purpose of the unit to keep you from going outside to check the temps???
Thanks to all for your input..I'll have to do some experimenting.
There has to be a better product out there.

| I know that I was very unhappy with my et-73 when I got it...basically broke right when I opened the package or came broke. The little switch on the reciever was busted. Also the thing probably works for about 20 feet...it might be fine for contests where I will never be inside and always close to the smoker, but certainly a bust at the house...off course with the WSM's I dont really need to check the temps anyway... |

| I have a Nu temp with dual probes. It works great for me straight out of the package. I get signals in my living room and bedroom. Maybe you guys can look at it. Saint. |
