I want to make a folding camp table. I have some Kevlar cloth. It's a remnant from a factory that makes body armor for the military.

I'm wondering if I can just stretch the cloth over a wooden frame and put epoxy resin on it. I've never done any sort of fiberglass work, other than patching a hole in a shower, but I've read a lot of stuff on West System.

Composites is my industry.

Yes, you could basically do what you've mentioned. However, I would think about acquiring either some Eglass or carbon and do the full table out of wet out fabric. You won't have to worry about your wood creating moisture issues.

Epoxy would be a good choice as its easy to work with. West Systems is pretty basic user friendly stuff. Its really all you'd need. Get one with a minimum of 30 minutes of working time.

There's quite a bit more to this and I'm on my phone. Shoot me a pm if you want further instructions.

*additional info*
If you're handy and interested in a project you can make the mold from mdf, eps foam, or plenty of other materials. You could then put a rolled edge on the table top. If you want simple you could just lay-up a flat sheet and trim the edges once cured.

This would be an excellent intro for working with composites. The process is much easier than one would think but there are critical steps which should be followed. In the end, if you do it properly, you'll have an extremely strong table top. Making it strong AND light would take further steps but is also feasible. Either way, it'd be a neat thing to do if you've never worked with these materials.
