Well my Illinois farmer boss tells me I'm hauling an exibit to New York next week but I'm not to worry because it's not going downtown. It's only going to Manhattan

He tells me they have parking for me too during the 3 day art show. I explain things to him and tell him to tripple verify the parking issue because ain't no 75 foot semi is parking on the island for 3 days. Well, the parking is in jersey.

I will be in a hotel with $150/day layover pay and $50/day street money.
The plan is to eat the street food on the south side and see what I can find to eat in china town. I've never been to the top of the statue of liberty because of the 3-4 hr line and the last time I saw ground zero, it was a hole in the ground. I will do central and battery park and get around on the subway. After that I'm out of ideas. I assume chinatown will burn half my time.
I considered bringing my $3k touring bicycle but I found out what happens to nice bikes there in less than 30 minutes on the streets.
My only true objectives so far is the stuff above and eating some falafels from the street vendors and cking out the pizza scene.
And yes I'm gonna get pics.

I was only there one time a few years ago, we were trying to find The Carnegie Deli, seems no matter who you ask where someplace is you almost always get the same answer, " I don't know I'm from the Burroughs " so we ended up going to Angelo's Pizza, I've yet to this day found another pie that good. We did find out where the deli was at after we got back home and it was only a block from our hotel. If you like toy stores check out FAO Schwarz, unbelievable, St. Patrick's Cathedral or any of the museums. and don't forget Little Italy.

Great Paella at Alcala on 44th between Second and Third ave. Kinda spendy but WOW:D great Paella. It is very close to the UN.

Get a gelato in Little Italy on a sunny afternoon if the weather is good. China town has about overwhelmed Little Italy. There is some really good Dim Sum to be had there.

Head down Wall Street from the Federal Reserve Bank just past the Stock Exchange on the opposite side of the street to the Irish Rose, an old fashioned hot lunch counter and fine group of Irish bar men. Watch out it can become an all afternoon lunch Cool If Jimmy is still there tell him Hello Mikie in Missouri. I am not sure I can find sober but some where downtown more west side is the Raccoon Lodge the same one Ed and Norton talked about in the Honeymooners Laughing The USS Intrepid is over on the West Side and is pretty cool.

Columbus Circle is easy to get to on the east side train and is something to see. Washington Square and all the folks speaking from the soap box is a pretty unique experience. Rockefeller Center, FAO Schwartz, the museums, Times Square and Central Park. Maybe corny for some but the good old Empire State building is kinda cool to me.

I spent a lot of time in Manhattan during the World Trade Center bombing trial and its aftermath. That ought to do it for a three days. If your looking for something else to do just take off walking and let the lights lead you around the town and stop in for a drink when your thirsty or a biet to eat when your hungry. This is especially good if your there on a weekend.

Good luck if you have to drive on the FDR we thought that meant the Freaking Demented Roadway:roll:

Have fun Smile

Three and a half hours from Chicago and you're going to check out the pizza in NYC?

If you like cured fish/lox Russ and Daughters is a must.

Patsy's on 8th and 23rd is good

I will second FAO Swartz

Carnegie Deli is not worth it.

Everything else I would tell you will break the bank.

ckone, after all I've heard about Carnegie Deli you make me glad I didn't find it.. Laughing , the little deli's we did try that were close to Times Square were pretty good, sometimes scary looking, but tasty. Medival Times had a pretty nice display of ancient weaponry and armor,

Go to Katz's Deli, 205 EAST Houston St. (212) 254-2246 . It's well worth it.

Rather than Chinatown, I really like Ollie's around Broadway. Used to go there for dinner before going to shows.

Miss going to New York. Used to go a lot when we lived in NJ. Have only been to NYC once since we moved to MA. Sad

Don't get me wrong on Carnegie. It was good, just not worth it. Elbow to Elbow, long wait, poor service, and a glass of Coke was like $5 no refills. Heck I think the sandwich was $20. (wife and I split it, but they charge you to do that too)

I can at least say I have been once, but I will never go back.

I wanted to eat at Lombardi's but decided I did not want to deal with tourist even though I was one. Carnegie and Katz's both fall into that category.

THX guys!
There are great restaurant lists for "Jury Duty" ppl and I got a bunch of ideas from that. That made me think of ethnic foods. Israel (I used to live there), Filipino, Chinese (I have time, I want to be there at lunch hour and see where the chinese pick to eat), maybe hunt up some Cuban food.

yeah mbellot, pizza (I'm writing this while sitting in Chicago...)

I have been working in Manhattan for over 30 years and I still stumble upon new places. Just walk around and stop in whatever strikes you. I have found some of the best places that way. Smile

THX patruns. thats kinda the plan in chinatown

Well, I invited the wife and 17 month old girl and they are coming too. I will only be able to do a third of what I planned but it will be more fun with the other half. She's never been to the apple.

I'm sure you will enjoy. Please don't limit yourself to Chinatown. Explore the East Village, Upper East Side, pretty much anything below Harlem and above the Financial District. Frankly, there are just too many places and not enough time. Smile

Sounds like a fun time. I went to NYC a few years ago, at Christmas time, to do 3 things - Pastrami on rye (went to Katz's, Stage, and Carnegie), Ice skating at Rockefeller Center under the X-mas tree, and seeing a Broadway show (saw Spamalot and The Producers). Had a blast, but it's an expensive place to visit. Like Pat said, just walk around. It's a neat city. I was lucky enough to have a 'tour guide' for part of my stay when I went - A friend of my mom's who's a native. PICS! Laughing

I always wonder how many people that visit have a kink in their neck when they get home, it's hard not to look up at all the really tall buildings they have there. My daughter was amazed at all the different languages she heard when we were there oh and don't stand on top of a steaming man hole cover very long.
