Has anyone re plated a grill grate? I have a grill grate I cannot get a replacement for and the grate is starting to rust. I would like to get it re plated if that is possible (like parts on a motorcyle maybe?). I don't know how it is plated (Chrome, nickel, ???) but it has lasted almost 10 years. I would appreciate any help or thoughts.

Post the dimensions of the grate. Is it a name brand grill? Even if the company does not offer a replacement grate there are companies that make them. I used to work at Lowes when I was in college and they had "universal" grates that would slide out wider to fit different size grills.

There are many grates to be had...all shapes and size , if you can't find one maybe a friend can make you one out of SS pencil rod. Good luck...

The grill is a Brinkmann Grill King Deluxe Heavy-Duty Charcoal Grill & Smoker. They stopped making it a few years ago. The grill grate is 16 1/4 x 29 3/4. I would prefer to have a single piece grate rather than the adjustable grates. My first choice would be to get the original re plated and my second choice would be a replacement and my third choice would be to have another one made. For some reason, the plating on this grate has outlasted 4 weber grill grates. I use this grill year round and I use it at contests to keep meat warm before turn in. I'm not ready to retire her yet. Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks Maniac. Never had a Porcelain Coated Cast Iron grate so I don't know how long they last but I'll keep this as an option.

Thanks patruns but that grate is not long enough. The grate is only 15 1/4 long. Mine is 29 3/4 long but it looks the same. It will fit my grill but it's not long enough. I do not understand why they list it as a replacement unless they expect you to use 2 (not sure 2 will fit but I will check).

Spray some Heavy Duty oven cleaner on the grate.
You know, the kind that puts holes in the ozone.
Then put it in a garbage bag in the hot sun for about an hour.

Wear gloves, use a scouring pad to remove stuff. Hose off. Repeat if necessary.
Spray some PAM on it, then hit it with a weed burner.
Might extend the life a little while.

I have done this with old Weber kettle grates and works great.

Thanks for the tip MacEggs. i am hesitant to use chemicals on my grill besides brillo and elbow grease, but I will try your tip if I run out of options. Hasn't been much hot sun in New York lately.

Maybe I missed it but what is the original great made of and what are you wanting to "re coat" it with?

Yeah, I think they expect you to use 2.....

With the weather on Long Island, you have plenty of time to decide. Smile

I do not know what metal the original grate is made out of. It looks similar to the grate on my Weber grill and the grate looks like it's chrome plated but I don't know anything about metal plating. I've seen auto and motorcycle parts chrome plated but I have no idea what is done to a BBQ grate because I've seen chrome plated exhaust pipes turn blue. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Ya, I hear you about the sun. Not much here, either.
That's the method I used last summer.

As far as chemicals ... a good scrub and hose-off, then weed burner ...
no chemicals left over to do any harm. Smile Smile

+1 on that! Don't buy the fru-fru 'Environment Friendly' crap. It just doesn't work. Nuke it. Scare small children. Kill the grass. De-laminate concrete Laughing Just a tip - make sure the grate is warm and dry before applying said chemical death Laughing

If that doesn't work to your satisfaction, I've used These people before. They're in Nashville, TN and do outstanding work on all kinds of weird stuff. I had them repair and replate some heavily damaged plastic pieces and they came out fantastic! Good luck!

I spray Pam on my WSM grates after cooking because they began rusting from lack of use. They are now pretty much seasoned like my smoker grates.
