Probably not a good thing. Competition keeps prices down. Although they will have more buying power. Sysco is the largest in this market and US Foods is 2nd then a handful of smaller guys. There is a limit on how cheap they can buy for. I don't know how much they can save in operating expenses either. I think it would be too close to a monopoly in this market. Service would be the only leverage for the smaller guy. I think Sysco makes their money off us small guys and just makes a token off national accounts. I wish I got the pricing of national accounts. I always said there should be a buying group for smaller businesses to get the buying power of the national companies. I could make a living off the savings I would have. I think a franchisee losses all the benefits as they pay out the misc. franchise fees. What a fickle game. _________________ The lessons are in the customer's criticism. They aren't always right. You might look into regional restaurant co-ops, you can tie into some national rates using those organizations, if they even exist in your area. _________________ Rod |

I thought I heard that the deal has already gone through.

My Sysco rep just came in today and handed me the flier that states the merger is expected to close in the 3rd quarter of 2014, and Sysco will absorb all of the US foods
I heard there is quite a bit of debt involved with acquisition US foods on the news.
How many here wish they could do billion dollar deals like this??
I know it is one of my dreams. _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

I dont care for sysco AT ALL! High pressure to make sales lead to my first salesman quitting, 2nd was fired for not meeting and exceeding sales quota, third was such a #$%^&* I even had customers say "your not bringing her back here, are you"!!
They pressed me to buy ABC packaging - complete meals just by their name, they do the assembling of said ABC for shipping....just heat and serve....NONE of what they were constantly pushing fit into BBQ, NONE of it! Sad part is how many 'raunts use the feature, and caterers in the area have the rep. of selling "cafeteria food" right off the sysco truck!!
I now use GFS weekly [growing Mid-West food supplier] and a bi-weekly run to RD for paper products and some things I just like from there over what others carry. Still haven't found anyone carrying as nice of ribs as Costco!
I personally hope it falls thru, I feel they are just hurting the industry in many ways already.
I go to our local cannery [ open to public on Wednesdays ] and buy direct - there on pallets are green beans, one can says sysco, the next one says GFS, the next says Green Giant and the next says Lakeside Foods [ considered generic label ] - all the same green beans, off the same line, from the same field, just different labels. Based on seeing this, price and service rule - sysco provided me with neither! _________________ Money Maker

About all I get from sysco is paper goods, fryer shortening, and produce.
They completely lost my meat biz in early 2010 when they decided to not carry fresh bone-in pork butts anymore. UW-Provisions is my meat provider, and they always will be.
If I have stock left, my UW driver will rotate it, and mark "Use First" for me.
I like Sysco cuz I can get a truck 6 days a week if needed, and I can order online with zero salesperson interaction if I want. And due to my volume, I do not need to meet minimum order amounts with Sysco, that comes in handy in winter.
I've had a great rep for the last few years, management saw my previous rep making many mistakes, and they swapped out reps to salvage my account.
Sysco tries to get me back occasionally whenever a new manager comes in. I hand them my UW invoices and say; Could you even get near these prices and grades?
That shuts them up quickly enough.
Tony, I've been through what you experienced with other providers, I know how aggravating it can be _________________ Just remember that the toes you may step on during your climb to the top will also be attached to the a$$es you'll be forced to kiss on your way back down! |

I see my GFS rep maybe monthly, and usually only if something didn't make the truck, and I too am fine with that - Sysco never bothered to set me up online [ which I asked for repeatedly ] messed up my billing etc too!! I would get denied delivery because my bill was overdue....I would have cancelled check already that I had handed to rep....Wife had the exact problems at her work [ accts payable at nursing home ] they would simply not deliver food for the old folks for a bill that was supposedly not paid months earlier but had been...Have YET [ only 2 years ] to have anything like it happen with GFS [ nursing home switched to GFS also without a hitch...to date ]
I found sysco's paper products to be WAAAY higher than GFS, the ONLY thing they remained competitive on was red potatoes when trying to get me back, that's it! _________________ Money Maker

Best story I have heard so far is about Sysco Reps (although they were told not to do this) approaching US Food customers and telling them they should go ahead and make the switch early to make it easy for them and to have an edge on everyone else. That my friends is not a "Rep" but a Salesman lol _________________ www.ridgeviewbbq.com

I LOVE Sysco.
2 deliveries a week. Driver puts everything where i want it.
They carry everything i need and go out of their waqy to find something i want.
I didnt like the ribs they had for awhile and bought from another supplier. My rep got that product brought in just for me.
Of course i prolly spend 10 times as much as you guys. _________________ 2013 BBQ Person of the Year

This is just sad news.
US Foods was keeping (or trying to!) Sysco honest and some competition. Sysco seemed to have no imagination, just high pressure sales and the same packaged crap from coast to coast. US Foods was a step above, with more local products, and catering to a higher degree of clientele.
This is like Bi-Lo buying out Publix. _________________ 22" Weber Smokey Mountain + Weber Spirit |
