Hello All! I've been lurking here for a while. I've learned a lot from all of you and it is much appreciated. I recently picked up 3 SS 5x10 sheets at the scrap yard for trade at scrap prices. These will be the main components for my 4'x2'x30"tall offset build. The C.C. and F.B. will be insulated with 1" mineral wool insulation. This will be a slow ongoing build I'm sure, but I will try to periodically update.
This is my start. I am trying to score and bend as many of the joints as I can, then weld out the outside corners. The only real advantage this is giving me is the ability to hold itself in shape for welding.
This is the inner C.C. all bent up ready to weld.
This plastic film kinda blows to remove on a slightly beat up sheet.
Inside with all the plastic removed.
Enjoy! Nick[img][/img][img][/img]

Use the image link from photobucket, i.e. [URL=...
You will also need to re-size your images as the look too big and will otherwise be turned into links by the forum moderator. _________________ Follow my Kiwi Cooker Build:

Ok, here are a few more progress pics. Bear in mind, I am just learning to tig, and doing it on my own. This project should get me a few hours with the torch.
I did a few inches at a time and moved around to try to avoid overheating.
that's the inner CC all welded out.
Here's the start of the outer layer of the CC. It will be done the same way, just 1" bigger all around. By the way, the inner skin is 12ga, and the outer is 11 ga. I would have liked to have the inner as the 11, but it is in better shape than the 12 was, so I thought aesthetically it would be better on the outside. |

Ooooh shiny! I love the look of stainless anything and I love fab work even more. You got a heck of a score on that material. Welds look great for just learning. Will be following the build for sure. _________________ "In God we trust, all others bring data!" |

Ok, so its been real slow going. Project went on hold for quite a while, but I've been back at it again here for a couple weeks. Trying to keep moving on this when I can.
this is the outer shell with some angle iron supports for the inner box to rest on and weld to. Also started insulating.
I'm all insulated and changed pace for a bit to work on the gratings/racks
Getting ready to slide the inner box in.
Like a glove
welding up the front bottom panel
Insulated and outer shell piece added.
Starting to look like something
Start of the firebox. Running low on the stainless. Picked up some 5/16" carbon steel at the scrap yard. Figured it would work better being thicker and all for the inside of the firebox. It too will be insulated and skinned with stainless
This will slide into the C.C.
Oops, welded on this folding table all day no problem. Went to lift the firebox off to clean up and down she went. Good thing I was able to get out of the way. |

Getting a little more work done. Let me know what you guys think.
Got the door built and wedged into place
Inside of firebox built and hanging. Didn't have enough stainless for all these pieces, so I picked up some 5/16" plate at the scrap yard. I figured the inside of the firebox could use to be a little thicker anyways.
This will be insulated and skinned with stainless
The throat sticking through into the C.C. The baffle plate will rest on the top of this.
Got the angle for the racks in
Here the racks are in, and the top and sides of the firebox are insulated and skinned
The F.B. door will be inset on angle, just as the C.C. door is
Drip edge on top of the F.B. door to help stop rain from getting in.
Got the hole for the chimney cut out
Chimney built. going to run it all the way down, but there is a plate at the bottom of the C.C. hole to block rain and condensate from collecting.
Chimney standing in place
Doh! in the water with this. Draped my tig hose over a fresh hot weld. Burnt a hole through. Argon escaping.
Temporary fix, silicon caulk, heat shrink, and a couple layers of electrical tape. Should get me up and running.
Looking forward to some feedback. Thanks for looking. |

That is a really nice project. With the insulated box, that would have been a good canidate for a gravity fed fire box.

Thanks, coming along nicely. Not sure I've seen a gravity fed offset. Or are you suggesting a vertical instead of horizontal smoker? |

Why not vertical or horizontal would work and give you time to drink beer instead of feed the pit. _________________ Why is it the least qualified person is always the first hired, and the first promoted?

Baspronick, that stainless looks awesome! You must have some sick bargaining skills to trade for that at scrap prices! Wheres the food p*rn? I'm jonesing, man! The 6 in of snow from tuesday finally left today.
Randy, good to see you posting. I took awhile off the ring this past summer and fall. Are you going to be doing any local comps this year?

Hey thanks man! I think there's more profit to be made of of the copper I traded them. Not much of a negotiator. Right place right time. Trust me, I can't wait to get cooking on it. There will be pics when I do. Probably a little learning curve at first since this will be my first smoker, so might not get you drooling just yet. |

Ok, Slow going, but I've got a little more done. I'm having fun with the build, but all the little stuff is starting to take forever. Ill be seasoning her soon with any luck though. Anyways, heres a few more progress pics.
Baffle plate is gently sloped towards the 1.5" drain. Guess I forgot to take a pic of the stainless all welded out.
Start of the intakes. 8 - 2.5" holes holesawed through 1/8" stainless and 5/16" steel with a 1" gap inbetween for insulation. This SUCKED and took FOREVER!
