| Does anybody know of any bbq competitions in Texas? My wife and I live near Dallas and we have been talking about going to Memphis in May, which I hear is awesome. I am a rookie and I thought by going to a bbq competition I can learn something new or helpful. |

The IBCA (International Barbecue Cookers Assoc,) sanctions a ton of contests in Texas, you can check their calendar:

There are several other sanctioning bodies for contests in Texas, like the Lone Star BBQ Society:

...or you can find other events here:

Hey Jared, Like Mike says there are a huge number of contests in Texas but not many like MIM. Most comps are teams and there families with nothing to do and no BBQ to buy, and unless you know someone you'll be out in the cold so to speak. Just telling you so you're not disappointed. There are a few that offer more to do, so you'll have to do your homework to find them. The smaller Rodeo BBQs are good ones to go to. The big ones are corporate BS. All thee best to ya bro. _________________ Zilla

Lonestar BBQ Society is a nice one to start in because the price is right. Usually between $65-$100 entry fee for all meats (3 meats - 1/2 chicken, pork spare ribs and brisket). Comps have teams from 15 to 50 and they are some of the friendliest folks around. Friday nights are usually "Cook's Dinner" or the Margarita/Bloody Mary contest, and that's when you get a chance to meet the folks. Actually, I think all bbq comps have friendly folks. IBCA is similar to Lonestar but has higher fees and consistantly a lot more teams, but it does have bigger payouts. Both are fun.
As for KCBS and MIM, I've not been to one since they require farther drives. From what I've read and seen on TV, they seem like they're just as fun to be at. I don't know if I can handle being a salesman and presenting my food to walk up judges like MIM does. That takes some additional talent. _________________ "Tag line?
