I've been reading reviews for weeks , Need some opinions. I am torn between the two , it seems that I may get more for the money from Backwoods , But Pitmaker boast superior quality . I am looking at the Vault (PM) VS Competitor (BW) . Sure wood like some experienced opinions !!

empty, I have never owned either but I can tell you this. In my opinion there should always be a disclaimer on anything being sold and boasting superior quality. The disclaimer should say "In our opinion our cookers are of superior quality". The bottom line is both cookers are nice, its a tough call that in the end only you can make. Wink
I hope this helps. Very Happy

After looking at other sights, if you go pitmaker makes sure to get ball valves instead of sliding vent. I think there is a thread on bbq breathern about it. It costs a little more, but people say it is worth it.

both are a great product once you learn their cooking style

Have you considered Humphrey or Stumps alongside your already tough decision on Pitmaker vs Backwoods? Humphrey doesn't make anything close to that size (the Vault) but Stumps make the XL Stumpster which is roughly 2/3 as big. Of course there is always the Spicewine Large smoker which is pretty close in size.

Large spicewines dwarf vaults. They are scary huge in person.

Humphreys will make a pit in any size you want if you call them. The Cube is larger than a BWS Fatboy. for the most part, a vault is roughly 5" wider than a Cube. maybe not even that much. In person the vaults are not as huge. Vaults are some damn nice looking cookers though.

The Assassin28 is very intriguing. 23x28" racks. that pretty big. Not quite Large spicewine but bigger than the vault

I've cooked on both and they are both great cookers. They both use the same downdraft design. The big difference is in fabrication and materials. The Pitmaker Vault is constructed from 1/8" steel and all seams are welded. The cooking grates are expanded metal instead of oven racks. The top of the firebox / bottom of cooking chamber is stainless steel. The Backwoods exterior is pop riveted sheet metal. A Backwoods Competitor weighs 350 pounds. The Vault weighs 850 pounds.
