Congrats.

You do realize that you won't really save any money growing your own stuff right? between water, compost, seeds/ starters, pest control, fertilizer and such. Ok may be a little.

I would do the raised bed vs the containers also. Pots/ buckets dry out to quick for me. of course I am in TX you are not.

Meet yourself in the middle and do multiple small raised beds instead of one big one. You can add a few each season instead of going all in at once.

I don't have a garden to mainly save money, although I do save a lot (you save more if you start your plants from seed vs buying starters). I know my biggest savings come from the lettuces and greens that we eat a lot of. Seeds are super cheap. I like it because it is a great stress reliever and I know where my food is coming from. I'm not a tree-hugger (unless I'm in my deer stand - don't wanna fall out Laughing ), but I try to grow as organically as I can, using my own compost and organic pesticides (like Spinosad). However if the bugs get too bad I'm busting out whatever bug death I can find Laughing .

Pretty much the same here. I quit after my daughter was born for lack of time, but started back for here sake. I want here to have a deep understanding of where food comes from.

Sweet 100's saved me money even using starters. around $2 for a plant that yields 8+ pints that would have cost $4 each.

Lettuce and herbs are $ savers for sure.

I'm not quite there on my own compost. I have a "pile" but don't maintain it like I should. I don't really have any trees to provide leaves, and with 2 dogs the grass clippings are a no go. (i mulch mow anyway for the sake of the grass) All the pile gets are kitchen scraps for the most part.

Picked some more peppers last night. Japs, Habs, and green Cayennes.

Canned 10 pints of the Cayennes and 2 pints of Japs. Gonna smoke, dehydrate, and grind the Habs and the rest of the Japs to make some more Dust.

Yeah, we have a few jars of things -

Stuff goes quick during the winter though.

Where is this? Garage or basement?

I don't have need yet, but am trying to get more into canning and I will overflow my pantry real quick. I don't have a basement and I fear the heat level in my garage during the summer.

ckone - They're in the basement in an un-heated/cooled part, but it's below ground so the temps stay in the 50-60 degree range year round. I agree a garage probably isn't a good idea in Texas Laughing . Do you have a crawlspace? Or maybe a closet on a bottom floor? You can store jars about anywhere, just don't forget where they are (I know nothing about that Embarassed Laughing )

Bkndsdl - Might be a little late for this year, but there's always next year! And we have about that many Cayennes almost ready to pick again. My mom's neighbor, who is 75 years old, loves these pickled Cayennes, so she's gonna be set this year!

Bugs, no crawlspace either. I'll figure something out when the time comes.

I did make 12 jars of pepper jelly last night. I never pulled my pepper plants and since I have been watering for the fall stuff they gave me a bunch of peppers.

some updated pics of the garden:

Lettuce in the foreground bed, arugula in the back weeds all in between.

back row l-r is strawberries, beets (they are up but barely) Brussels, cauliflower.

front row is turnips, broccoli then the aforementioned peppers

P's by the wood fence, a late 2nd go at cukes by the wire with Fava's coming in to take over. the other box is carrots, radish and kale. you can also see two of my artichoke plants that I split from a previous one.

I've got one more artichoke plant to divide out as it is shooting pups out. Unfortunately (not really) it has been raining a lot here lately. (8+inches since Sat and we had 6+ a week ago)

Great looking garden you got there ckone! I'm super jealous of the Artichokes. Love, love, love em - especially the little purple Italian ones. Just couldn't get them to grow here for some reason Evil or Very Mad . Our greens and lettuces are coming along nicely. Need to pick a bunch more peppers tomorrow (Cayenne, Poblano, Japs, and Habs) since we've been gone a couple of days goofing off at the lake Laughing .

Another lil update - Picked the last of the peppers (except a few small Poblanos) last couple of nights. Put up 15 more pints of Cayennes and Jalapenos. Put about 20 Habs in the dehydrator. Made a big ol pot of chili last night using roasted Poblanos and Japs (with Bambi in the pot Laughing ) with a little Devils Dust for good measure.

Most of the greens are doing good -

Radishes doing great. I let these get real big and grate them to make a Radish slaw.

Collards and Mustard greens. Planted (from seed) the Collards a little late, so it'll be spring before they're ready.

Brussel Sprouts starting to really take off.

'Salad Bowl' Lettuce. Gonna pick a bunch tonight to go with the chili.

Kohlrabi and Swiss Chard.

Bibb Lettuce. Not growing all that good because the soil isn't that good in the bottom two tiers of the garden. They are new areas and will take a couple more years of amending.

Got Beets and Turnips too.

I need to update my garden pics. Things are filling in nicely.

Still getting peppers, so I just made a bunch of hot pepper relish.

Bugs you are going to hate me, but thanks to splitting, i now have 10 artichoke plants going. (and have 5 back ups in on little bed that I am not sure what to do with) I think you need to try again. I was reading about people growing them in the northeast so you should be able to do it one way or another.

NICE! I made a little bit of that (not nearly enough) and it went quick. Yeah, I'm jealous of the Artichokes Laughing . I need to do some research on varieties that grow good here. I'd really like to be able to grow the little purple ones like you get in Italy. I picked a bunch of lettuce and a few radishes last night -

I let them get big so I can grate them for Radish slaw. Like coleslaw, but Radishes instead of Cabbage.

Picked another bowl full of peppers, cleared off the plants. We had a light freeze a few days ago so i decided they were done. That and I am the only one in the house that eats spicy stuff right now and i am getting overstocked.

Updated pics of the garden:

beets

cauliflower

kale and carrots with a few radishes left to pick. (should have planted more radishes but now i am out of space.)

just planted onions today

artichoke, favas, and dogs

turnips

lettuce

Broccoli, I have already picked 2 10" crowns with 2 left.

Looking good ckone! You have much trouble getting beets to grow? This is the first year I've been able to get them to grow good. Wife loves them, but me not so much Laughing . Looks like you did the same type lettuce (Butter somethingoranother) I did and I love the taste - Which is good because it grows like crazy!

the lettuce is called "green salad mix" from Lake Valley Seed. (i buy all of my stuff at a local nursery)

Compared to everything else, I don't think the beets are doing that well.

It was about 10 years ago when i first started growing veggies, so far onions, potatoes and radishes are the only underground stuff i have had much luck with.

I looked at the seed package and that lettuce is called 'Salad Bowl'. I guess I was thinking of the Bibb. My beets aren't growing all that great either, especially compared to the turnips, but they're actually growing (as opposed to getting a couple of inches tall and dying out Embarassed ). My Mustard greens have gone nuts, just in time for turkey day. We're going to our daughter and future son-in-law's place for Thanksgiving and I'm gonna make a HUGE pot o greens (Including Turnip greens). I can't hardly wait - one of my favorite things to eat!
