Lets face it. If you are on this forum you are serious about making food worthy of talking about. Along with that comes a knowledge of ingredient quality and a VERY keen sense of what each component costs and what work goes into cooking it the right way to get a pleasing product.

With that said.... How many of us have become the guy that gets grumbly when out voted and going with a large group to places you know are not close to what you could whip up in 20 mins and charge an amount that you could eat on by yourself all day on?

I know I personally became THAT guy. But over the years I've found ways around it. Namely ONLY eating dishes I have never made or that have ingredients I can't readily get or that I don't wanna put the work into(intricate fresh pasta or stuffed fresh pasta are two).

Oddly enough this doesn't apply to BBQ. I get so interested in what other peeps stuff tastes like I can never turn down a chance to go to a new joint. Steak, on the other hand, I can get down right ornery. So I go safe with prime rib. Laughing

Yup, the wife and I are THAT couple. I cringe if somebody suggests a chain restaurant.

Yep. Restaurant food has become more and more disappointing for me these last few years I've been Qing more. I like trying out BBQ joints too, but more often than not I leave dissapointed. Like you I get stuff I don't cook for myself or the family.

YUP! That's me Embarassed . I'm not a big fan of chain raunts, except for Waffle House Laughing , so I usually order something that I figure they can't screw up too bad (like a cheeseburger).

When the wife and I go out to eat, we go to places that have the kinds of food I don't make. Except for good Italian food - I'll sit and let someone else cook for me all day long Laughing

That's pretty much me as well. And we tend to patronize family-run places over chains. Places that serve things I don't (or won't) cook. Even at the diner up the road that serves breakfast all day. I'll pay for someone else to cook breakfast (I hate making pancakes and waffles) for me. Don't get me wrong, we eat pretty good at home and from a wider variety of world cuisines than most people mostly because cooking is my creative outlet. I hate going out to a 'raunt, getting something I could have made at home much better for twice of what it would have cost me to make it myself.

So, yeah, I'm that guy.

I no longer get bbq at restaurants anymore with one exception. I only get steaks at a high end restaurant. Can't stand it when somone brags about a place and we eat there and the food no where near as good as mine.

lantern, yes I am THAT guy. I avoid chains if possible and generally order stuff I don't wanna cook.

I'll try any new BBQ place that opens and don't care for most of them around me. Sad

If the little lady wants to go out, I'd rather cook at home and just go out for dessert and drinks. I don't win that argument often though. Embarassed

LOL!! I'm glad I'm not alone!! And it seems everyone has the same routine!

Now with that said if I do find a place that has truly unique or just downright great food I sing their praises as loud and often as I can. Taking pride in sending people to decent places to eat.

I ran into two such places over the last year. Annnnnnd one is actually a BBQ place!!!!! Shocked

9 mile in Asheville,NC is a great place serving Caribbean inspired foods....and my beloved Cheerwine.

And Woodlands BBQ in Blowing rock,NC I can with confidence say is THE best BBQ joint West of Lexington. If you ever go and theres two of ya...get the pigout for two and have them finish the ribs and wings in the house recipe. Ya get wings, half rack baby backs, half rack spares, pork bbq and chopped brisket with SIX sides plus hushpuppies for 25 bucks!!! Hows that for value? You'll need to walk it off later at the Tanger outlets just down the road. Laughing

I tend to focus on the social aspect of going out with friends when we go out with friends. If I go as a food critic more often than not, what should have been a good evening will turn into a disappointment. We have some "go to places" that our friends love, that are always good. But if there is someone in the group that wants to do say, Olive Garden.....I order 2 or 3 bottles of wine....we drink, eat and have a blast. Sometimes food is the star of the show....when the food can't be the star of the show I like to make it about friends being together.

That would be me, I am that guy. The biggest reason we have gotten into BBQ is that we cannot get good BBQ here. Up here people call BBQs ground beef with BBQ sauce mixed in, aka a sloppy joe. When going to a restraunt the ribs are so over done the meat is mushy, bbq chicken refers to the sauce put on it and most times the brisket tastes like plain old roast beef. There was a bbq restraunt that opened near by and they were bragging about how they brought in a commercial smoker and how bbq was going to be a specialty. We have tried them twice to give them a chance but we wont be going back again. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and no evidence of smoked meat or bark, the brisket sandwich is pulled then slathered in sauce. When I picked up the brisket sandwich the bun was soggy on the bottom from all the fat and grease ozzing out the side. It was like they had the meat sitting the the aujus with no fat removed them slopped some sauce on it and onto the bun. The last time we were there the wife complained that I have ruined all bbq restraunts for her because ours is so much better.
