Ok so I want to build a offset reverse flow smoker over this summer or when I can finance it. So to the question how exactly should I go about building it I do plan on using a oil tank to build it with. I also had an idea on taking the bed off a 2wd ranger and mounting it on the back is this possible and/or intelligent to try to do.[/img]

Newenglandbbqer, here is a link to one Mr.Tony built.

http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56301

Possible and intelligent are two seperate matters. Shocked

JM2C but, that is gonna be pretty large, requiring alot of steel, if financing is a issue, the costs are gonna add up quickly. For a rough guess, figure out what your materials will cost and double it, at least. Shocked

The tank and steel aren't the issue, it's $35 for welding rod, the $20 for grinding wheels, $50 here, $50 there, etc. that add up quickly. Rolling Eyes

If you want a bigger cooker, you could build a UDS for very little $, and start gathering materials for a bigger R/F.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Very Happy

The link GF provided is a good one to follow. Mr T built an awesome cooker while spending the least amount $$ as possible. A UDS might be your best bet to get started, they are pretty cheap to build and that will get you started in some smoking while you can save up $$ and scrounge up parts here and there for your big build.

Well Thanks for the advice and what would be the problem with mounting a smoker on the back of a truck? I would probably put a fuel cell in the cab to prevent an exploding gas tank

Ryan, so your okay riding around with gas in the cab of a truck? Please find another form of transportation for your cooker.

With a smoker on the back where other than the cab would I be able to put a fuel cell. Also a diesel truck would make it safer. Also safer than a pinto.

Newenglandbbqer, safer than a pinto isn't setting the bar too high. Shocked

Besides the blow up factor and playing with fuel cells, setting it on the frame leaves it kinda hard to reach, unless your really tall.

All the commercial manufacturers put em on trailers for a reason, they can't all be wrong, can they?

I was thinking of making fold down plates to stand on to reach everything. I'm about 6ft tall at the moment.

Well I'll get it done sooner or later but it will be awesome and it will be one of a kind and if you never try you'll never know the benifits/consequences
