well here goes nothing just looking for some feed back and direction to go in here.

This is going to be a quick brief of what i want to do as i am heading to work.

So over in the inductions i posted some pics of this cooker that was givin to me and i want to turn it in to a whole hog cooking machine. I dont no if i should give up or run away but i am going to set back a punt for right now.

so to some specs and then some pics.

fire box is HUGE.
42x22x18

my hole is 21x4 with a flap type gate to regulate the heat.

the tank is 69x41.5x26

and it looks like i have about 6" to work with from my hole to the bottom of where i was going to but my cooking grates.

this is what i started with i think you can see in this pic that the whole where i put my vent was huge so i made it smaller.

i think this is what Maniac was talking about my box being to high but i am hoping that this can still work out.

I am going to quote maniac and kam for my other thread just so they dont have to repeat themselves:

Rokhound welcome to the ring. The plate is usually a continuation of the top of the firebox...in your case you may need a deflector if your box is to high. 6" is a comfortable from plate to grate. You should post this in cookers you will get more help there.

Rokhound,
Without seeing pics you can work from this.
As Maniac mentioned the top of the R/F plate should be an extension of the top of the firebox in my opinion, this keeps the heat/smoke moving freely. If the top of the firebox is between 1" and 5" to the top of the cooking grate no deflector should be needed.
1.)My biggest question is where do I put the baffle plate how much of a gap at the one end do I need?
The opening opposite the firebox should be at least as large as your recommended firebox to cooking chamber opening.

2.) How far should my cooking grate be from my baffle plate?
The distance between the top of your lowest cooking grate and the R/F plate can be anywhere from 1" to 5" in my opinion. Any farther and the efficiency of the needed radiant heat is lost in my opinion.
I hope this helps. Very Happy

thank for the help so far guys this is going to be a fun build not nearly as cool as some on here but i hope it works just fine for me.

Rokhound, I ran your numbers on the calculator and here is what I have.
Your cooking chamber measures out to 322 gallons.
1/3 of that is 24794.00 Cu. in.
Your firebox is 16632.00 Cu.in.. This is smaller than recommended but since this is what you have in place I would go with it.
Your recommended firebox to cooking chamber opening is 133.06 Sq.in.
Your 4" x 21" is 84.00 Sq.in. this is smaller than you need and I would increase it.
A 6" 3/4" x 21" would be 133.88 Cu. in. and put you where you need to be.
A 6" ID exhaust would need to be 30" tall.

Note:My suggestion is to take out the adjustable damper, as cool as it may seem it is not needed. Increase your firebox to cooking chamber upward to the size given, this will get you closer to your grate and allow for the proper flow.
I hope this helps. Very Happy

ok looking at this to day and the way i understand this my hole at the other should be 3.25x42 then that will give me 136.5 which is close to my other cubic right?? also i want to use 3/16 plate steel for my baffle plate would that be ok.
