Mrs Tony just informed me there is a paved area outside Dallas where they drive Nas-cars pretty fast while turning left only preferably, weekend of April 13....anything else to do in that area if we go, like, maybe taste some BBQ?

You will be 3+hrs north of the ones people talk about the most, but there is Q in Dallas that is supposed to be good.

There are a few Ringers up there too.

Change the title of this thread to Dallas area Q and you might get more info. I don't do the fast cars turning left and skipped this thread several times before I said "wonder what Mr Tony is asking/ talking about".

I was in the big D a month ago.

I found this place... http://www.mikeandersonsbbq.com/

Pretty good. Long lines and that is a good thing! Free ice cream with lunch.

I would go back again.

Did you know that in Southern Illinois they say you-ins instead of y'all?

I have nothing on Dallas BBQ. Very Happy

Bad thing is, the TMS is a bit in no mans land, lol. There are some standard Q restaurants in the area, but more commercial than the shack on the side of the road type shacks (which I consider greatness).

Dickeys BBQ (par at best)
Sonny Bryan's near the airport (better than Dickeys and a safe bet)

My choices out that way would be:

Up N Smoke - Some real good Q and worth the short drive to get there http://www.upnsmokebbq.com/

Texas Pit BBQ - Have had friends rave about this place, but never been myself http://www.yelp.com/biz/texas-pit-b-b-q-saginaw

Shady Oaks - Typical bbq resembling the Sonny Bryan's experience, but better in my opinion http://www.shadyoakbarbeque.com/

Overall I'd go w/ Up N Smoke as it's the best of all and not but maybe 8-10 miles from the track Wink

Where are you staying? That will make a big difference on where you can go due the large amount of race traffic.

The track location will give you pretty easy access to Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton. If you had down 35W towards Fort Worth there is a Sonny Bryants about 10 minutes south. If you keep going there is a Risky's http://www.risckys.com and a Cooper's Pit BBQ http://www.coopersbbqfortworth.com in the stockyards. I like the smoked bologna and cheese at Risky's and I enjoyed most everything I ate at Cooper's. There is also Hard Eight BBQ http://www.hardeightbbq.com in Roanoke and also one in Coppell. I enjoyed everything but the brisket. They also give you free samples when you walk up.

If you do make it to the Stockyards, give Joe T. Garcia's a try and try to sit on the patio. http://www.joets.com It is cash only but they have an ATM on site. If you want fine dining, there is Lonesome Dove http://www.lonesomedovebistro.com which is a modern Texas cuisine place.

I have also heard really good things about the Pecan Lodge www.pecanlodge.com in the Dallas Farmers Market, but Dallas is on the other side of the world from my side of Ft. Worth and I haven't gotten up the ambition to go there. Good luck and don't forget your sunscreen for the race.

Mr. T, I'll tell you my "Texas" story sometime. Can't help you with the Q though Embarassed However, if you're driving you will go right through St. Louis. You might be able to find some decent Q there.

Just sayin'.

REALLY appreciate the input - vacation is in the early planning, but tickets and lodging still available [ I'm told ]
I spent 2 years at Ft Hood a lifetime ago...early 80's, and havent been back to the Lone Star since....Never ate any Q there other than out of back yards - best an only BBQ goat I've ever had!! Something tells me I'm not gonna find that on the menu at Sonny's Embarassed
I DO know I'll never stop in collegetown again....crookedest justice of the piece/judge I've ever seen....as bad as any one you've seen in the movies...other than that , I LOVED Texas! Cant wait to get back, and into the back country for a spell Wink Been to Dallas once, big city aint for me.....
