I have been wanting to buy a new pit for a couple years and I just got the green light from the Mrs. She basically told me I can buy whatever I want as long as I stay around $5000 Very Happy. I am leaning towards a RF and would appreciate some advice on which pit builder you guys recommend. Thanks

For bang for the buck, I like some of the http://www.easttexassmokercompany.com/ There are two or three locally, they look good, they don't have the cache of the Lang name, but they appear well constructed!

jteasley, I am only basing my opinion on past reports of members who bought new Lang cookers. Their gripes on the cooker they received were legitimate in my opinion and the cooker should not have left the factory with the problems they had. The response time was less than stellar on Langs side so if you decide to take possession of one I would look the cooker over closely before doing so.
Bubba grills and east Texas smokers both make nice cookers as well.

Note: I have nothing against Lang cookers they cook just as good as any other R/F on the market it is their quality control of late I have a problem with. I am basing this solely on reports from here on the ring for all I know changes have been made.

Wink
Not to take a side on this Kevin, but I am told Bubba's cause more grease fires than any rf out there!! From what I recall [ its been a few years since I compared Bubba to the Lang] The Bubba has no grease rail or drain whatsoever! Even owners here on the Ring stating how careful they need to be!! I dont know squat about the East Texas unit, but from what I have read here, I am glad I didnt buy the Bubba. JM2C
Hows that gullet doin Bro?!

The gullet is doing fine Brother Tony Thank You for asking. Very Happy I was not referring to the grease traps in particular. It was welds not being completed and other items that were overlooked. As far as I know both new Lang and Bubba grills need to implement the grease bridge and I have openly stated this before. Their lack of interest in this lets me know that they know there is a problem because of all the feed back to them but adding it as a part of the build now would say that they overlooked something plain and simple.

I have a Meadow Creek TS250 and love it, rock solid smoker. I cooked ribs last weekend in 20F weather with it. Lots of options with a Meadow Creek. Look at the link for info as that is what I used when I was looking. Any queations PM me.

If Jeepdad's Lang is still for sale, I'd take a hard look at that....I believe he has done all the mods and took real good care of her since he got it. It will no doubt make a nice cooker.

His Craigslist add has expired or I'd post the link.

You could also look into a vertical from Stumps or Pitmaker....not sure what you are wanting to do with it as a trailer takes up a lot of room.

Here is a short video of my new trailer built by Pits By JJ. We will be selling them as a joint venture with Big Ron's Rub & Pits By JJ. Once pricing has been firmed up, I plan to create a web page on my website to sell them, and also plan to shoot another video this weekend when I fire it up and more videos showing the features of the new cooker. Backyard and trailer models will be available.

You can do alot with 5 grand. I would look carefully and think about what you are going to use it for. I'm assuming you are looking at a trailer rig. Get as many features as possible built onto the trailer as you can.

Mine was built by Wreckless here on the board and I would highly reccommend contacting him about the possibilities of a custom build.

Mine for instance is a 24X60 smoker with a vertical warmer. Has a prep table with underneath storage, 2 propane burners, room to tie down 3 coolers and a ample wood storage bin all built onto the rig. Pretty much hook up and go. No need to spend a half hour loading other things into the truck.

It is a conventional flow with tuning plates which in my opinion is superior to a reverse flow set up and gives you much more flexibility.

I'd post pics but I can't seem to get them sized right for acceptance on this board.

I too have heard of cs issues with Lang. If a custom build isn't what you are looking for give Lone Starz Grills a look.

WOW, Ron. That is one sweet looking cooker you are building.
I'm anxious to find out what your pricing will be.

Thanks for all of your input it has all been a great help. After reading a lot of the post in the cooker section I am giving serious consideration about building one. I am a structural welder by trade and I figure that I will be able to buy myself a decent welder and build an amazing pit with the amount of money I am looking to spend.

If you are a welder, this is the place to build your own. Problem solved. Good luck and I am sure many are excited to see your build
