Posted: Jan 05 2013 Post subject: How a redneck fixes a tire on a wheelbarrow - Update 4/2014 |
|
|
Here's an update 16 months later because *some people* didn't think this would work Well...It has, so far. I don't carry concrete in it and it still works like a champ for light garden use.
Original post -
I had a flat/rotten tire on a wheelbarrow and it was gonna cost me $20 for a new tire and $10 for a tube (parts only). I figured out a better way - Dismount tire, take the tube out, remount tire, drill a couple of 3/8" holes in the tire (for fill holes), and fill with Great Stuff expanding foam. I'll bet for the $5 I spent that I get at least one more season out of it
I think this might be the answer to flat tires
Gonna let it sit overnight to cure and then scrape off the excess. _________________ The Matt Ryan of LIARS! (#2)

It's a great thinking outside the box thought, but has been tried & failed many times. The foam is not resiliant enough & after X number of revolutions you are stuck with a really nasty semi- flat tire. Hate to bust your bubble(S)... |

Yup! |
Well, we'll see. I figured it prolly wouldn't last too long, but WTH - it's just an old POS with rust holes in it . I'm not carrying concrete in it, just light garden stuff.
All fixed up and ready to work _________________ The Matt Ryan of LIARS! (#2)

If the foam dries then the tire becomes solid. It is not like fix a flat. Given enough air time the foam will cure and the tire pretty much bullet proof. I do not see your thinking jess. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Looks good. The only thing I would think would happen is the stuff would eventually break with weight but I would think it would hold up for a while. _________________ The artist formerly known as Liar #95

That's my thinking (oh sh!t, he's thinking again ). Thanks, Kevin!
Manana - I don't plan on carrying any heavy stuff in it. Shovel, rake, bag of fertilizer, mulch, etc. _________________ The Matt Ryan of LIARS! (#2)

I do not see your thinking jess. | Think of it as hitting a pc. of wood -solid- with a hammer several times, it makes indentations. Again not knocking good out of the box thinking but several yrs. ago I was the proud owner of a really nasty semi flat lawn mower tire. JMHO... |

Manana, it is more the consistency of what you find in the bottom of some flower arrangements. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

I think that if you used the oil based product and go easy on the weight, it will hold up for a bit!! The water base product has no strength! Let it cure for a few days minimum as air cannot get in to aid in drying - I made a killing removing this stuff from around windows and doors from guys overfilling...when it finished expanding, doors and windows were squished shut!!!Some to the point of glass bowing and even breaking!!!! I have an artist friend who makes and repairs art [ think museums, churches, beer tapper handles etc] with the true industrial versions of this stuff! He makes the molds out of it - has big medieval looking presses in his shop to hold stuff together as it expands, making absolutely solid plastic like substance that withstands a 9mm pretty good!!!!! For future reference, spray water in whatever your filling to make it grow even bigger and faster!! HFG is right, I have clothes that are falling apart around that crap, but the foam is keeping them together ...!!!...lol _________________ Money Maker

You could have installed an inner tube in the tire, though you would still have had to air it up.

Well, a tube was $10 and a tire was $20. The foam was $5. Doing the math, I wasn't spending $30 on an old POS that was only gonna last me another year anyway . I can get a new wheelbarrow for $60, plus I already had a can of foam, I was bored and drinking a few beers _________________ The Matt Ryan of LIARS! (#2)
