I have a 20" dia. x30" tall chamber with a 14" tall lid...was wondering if basket and grates will work with this short of a chamber.

Maniac, the grates for a 18 1/2" kettle may fit, not sure what they measure.

The 22 1/2" cooking grates measure 20" and the coal grate is 17".

Enjoy your new project. Very Happy

......my thought is lose the insulation and skin.....

If it is high-temp insulation keeping it would make it more efficient (though a UDS is already efficient enough for most folks)

If it is not high-temp insulation, or you are not sure, get rid of it.
The insulation could smoulder or burn in the area of the charcoal basket, which would be bad.

GF have the grates.....just didn't know if the height was going to pose a problem. it is shorter than a 55 gal drum..but the lid "should" make up for it.

Catman the insulation is high temp....it is a stack for a boiler. 1900 degree. Just thought the building process with the bolts ect would be a pain in the a$$

Thanks guys Exclamation

I saw a fella win the Invitational at the American Royal cooking on a few garbage cans with wash tub lids and aluminum foil gaskets set up to cook like a UDS, so I think if the materials can withstand the cook and are safe at temps you are good to go!

Maniac, I'm with ya now. Wink
I'll get some measurements when I wake up enough to read a rule.
I'd be awful tempted to leave the insulation and outer skin. Shocked
It'll be a PITA one time, it may run for 2 days at a time though. Cool

Maniac...Ya'll got the beginnings of a killer cooker! From what 'Ya mentioned about the high temp dome, it will work to your advantage...All of the cooking is done at the grate level where the energy is cocentrated...Think about using the added dome space for raised, additional grates to increase your cooking area volume. Wink

What about your fuel and firebox...have you given that any thought yet?

Looking forward to this build! Cool

Best Regards,

Tony

I think I see what you mean. Just need to be sure you don't over torque them and warp the metal. Use k-nuts and maybe a touch of Loctite and snug 'em up and they should be fine.

I'm looking forward to this, too!

Tony.....the chamber is lined.....but the dome is not. I really do not know if I'm going with the liner.....have to think it out a little more....did you think that having an insulated dome was a good thing? If so i will have to look in my archives for another dome a little smaller so i can fill in between . thanks for looking.

KAKid
thanks for the suggestion...I'll see if they have them in ss. the difficulty i was talking about was the double wall and trying to get the bolts in...drilling ...line up..ect. i have a nutsert tool that is like a pop rivet tool that leaves thread when you pop it i'm looking if i have enough inserts.. Embarassed

Maniac, my lower grate on the UDS is 26" from the bottom, the top is 5" up from that one.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Very Happy

will 2 ss rivets per clip be strong enough to hold clips on the inside of the uds for the food grates...would save me going thru the double wall with bolts.
