I have a homemade cooker which measures 20 x 30 cooking chamber with a 16 x 16 firebox. I am wanting to replace the firebox with another box with measurements of 20 x 20.
My question is this, Is the size of my cooking surface to small for a bigger firebox?

Going up in size is not normally the problem, and as DP says, you can always build a smaller fire.

Make sure that your intakes are below grate level, make sure you have enough intake to run the pit, make sure that you are not over sizing the fire box to cooking chamber opening, build the grate off the floor of the firebox 2 or 2.5" and it should be all good.

That will work perfectly. I just got through doing exactly the same thing. My cooker is 20 x 32 and I went from 16" firebox to 21". Works great. I also enlarged the exhaust from 4" to 5" in the process--it seemed to have a little draft problem with the 4".

Thanks for the info. Already planned on increasing the size of the intake.
