We are having our first BBQ contest in Marvell Ar in oct. it will be a backyard type contest with blind judging. Since I'm the only guy who really cooks BBQ I was automatically made te chair. I know most times a chair can't enter the contest, but what about of it's total blind judging and I'm not involved at all with the judging? Just curious. I hate that we are having our first one and not get the chance to be te first winner. _________________ Lee G

And if you win what will the other teams think? Even if it is blind judging. _________________ Uncle Bud

We get questions like that all the time, and I'll give you the same answer I always give organizers/chairmen/promoters: let someone else do that, you be in charge. First of all, you won't have time for something like judging; trust me, just being the chairman of a contest will demand a LOT of your time. And secondly, it looks really bad, like you're trying to "fix" the contest. Even if you're not and everything is on the up-and-up, someone who didn't win will be SURE they would have - and the first person they will accuse of doing something underhanded is you, particularly if you were involved in the selection of the winner. ESPECIALLY if there's money involved.
Perception is often more important than what's real; that's how rumors get started! And you don't want your contest getting a reputation like that if you can avoid it. We typically tell promoters that they can't be a judge or cook in their own contest; if they just HAVE to do that, they have to step down as a promoter and let someone else take charge.

I'm liking this thread already.
JD Witt (member here) and I were talking about a backyard contest in my hometown of Ash Grove the other day.
He had been asked to "Take Charge", but he wanted to compete too. I think we were both in agreement about the non-competing thing. If you are involved in running the contest, you can't compete. But ...
How do you feel about kinfolk entering? Team members? Does or should that DQ them also? _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

I agree with the feeling cheated and that's what I'm wanting to avoid. I guess I have two choices. Maybe get the ball rolling then wipe my hands clean or suck it up and not compete. That's no fun tho. Decisions, decisions. _________________ Lee G

October don't give you much time to get things done.
How are you gonna select your judges? Local professionals, banker, teacher, radio DJ, TV anchors are good to know and have on board.
You may have to request each team provide a judge. Just make sure they don't get their own box. Set Team's Judges 1 thru 6 at one table, 7 thru 12 at the next and so on. 1st table judges the 2nd tables cooking and vice versa.
Hold a quick judging class.
Get score sheets, placemats and boxes lined up.
Get your Rules and Regs printed for each team and all judges.
Lots of other things to consider also.
You better get busy. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411
