I decided to build my first and this is what I have so far...it is a work in progress. I used the calculator from the forum here and that was wonderful! I have cooked once in it so far and it did great but still have to figure it and all the tricks of the trade out.

| I really like the wood storage beneath the tank itself. Good use of space. |

Fatpig your rig looks great!
I like the dual stacks. How did the spring work on your lid?
Did you have 3 or were you just preparing for them?
Keep an eye on your trailer weldments I have a similar one and I beefed it up with square tube and angle iron. nice job _________________ RF Smoker

Looks real good so far. A future add on might be a 2" drain. And as a ditto to maniac, keep an eye on the trailer, she looks to be the flip kind which usually signifies a light load rating, the pit ballance / axle placement looks fine. good luck with the work in process. _________________ Backyarder

Thanks for the comments!

The dual stacks add a bit of look to it I think, that wasn't my intentions but it does. My metal supplier didn't have any 6" pipe and would have been special order so that = special price . The spring is off an older model (70-80's) vehicle hood. It works pretty good. The 2 other eye hooks I had placed for springs bought at Home Deopt but they didn't have enough spring to them. The lid is kind of heavy to start but once the spring straightens out it is great.
As far as the trailer...yes it is one of the "flip" type i guess. It has a 1700# rating. I think I read somewhere on here a 250 gal propane tank = 1000#. So with that 1000# and all the metal I bought was 500# (but didn't use all of it) I'm thinking it's right at 1400-1450. That's pushing pretty close and next time I do believe it will be a heavier trailer.

There is a small drain hole/bolt on the bottom of the cooker and the fire box, although they probably do need to be larger. That one I can fix with no problem if it becomes one.
Thanks again for the hints and tips!! |
