All,
I am looking to join a BBQ association here in Central Texas / Austin area. Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Looks like I have a few to choose from, but don't want to join one that I will not enjoy.
ICBA - International BBQ Cookers Association
CTBA - Central Texas BBQ Association
LSBS - Lonestar BBQ Society - Can't access their website
Any suggestions? Seems like these three sanction several events in this area. _________________ Famous for tough and dry Briskets, lookin to change that! |

You might want to go to some contests and see what you like about each - it all depends what constitutes what you enjoy. What one person enjoys isn't always what another enjoys!
What are your reasons for joining a BBQ association? You understand that for most contests, you don't have to be a member of an organization to cook in a contest that they sanction, yes?

You bring up a good point.
I guess the three main reason's for wanting to join are:
Supporting, showing appreciation to the organization through paying dues
Getting to know other BBQ'ers in my area
I like the idea of competing via the cumulative point system, seems interesting
Other than that, is there any other advantages in joining an organization? _________________ Famous for tough and dry Briskets, lookin to change that! |

Hate to sound like a broken record, and I only know about IBCA in these terms, but the added money at the IBCA invitational (at Trader's Village in Grand Prairie every year) is available only to members...and I know it was over $11K last year. And you also have added money events in most of the Pits where Pit members are eligible for added money.

IBCA has the most sanctioned cook offs in Texas, way more and is a great organization. Traders this year will be around 25 grand. Centarl Texas has a lot of cook offs very close to you that are IBCA sanctioned. _________________ SMOKE AND SPICE MAKE EVERYTHING NICE! |
