What is a good set up for a beginner? I want to get something for the kid to start cooking on. He only cooks for himself and a couple other people ocasionally but shows interest in what I have been doing. He is not mechanically inclined but I can help him if it was something that needed mods to work well. His birthday is thursday and any opinions would be appreiated.
Thanks. |

pitbullinc, for grilling and indirect cooking an Old smoky is a good choice. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

There is a good thread on ecb mods in the cooker section. I believe he even put the cost of it and it wasn't bad. Eric

I would suggest a Weber Smoky Mountain in 18.5 inches. I have the 22.5 Inch model and love it. It is plenty of room for the number of folks I cook for. If he is only cooking/smoking for 3-6 people, the 18.5 inch will work perfect depending on what he is smoking. _________________ AD1 (AW) Ret

What about a UDS?
Easy to build for the none mechanically minded! You could put together a DIY kit for him, and lend him a drill with a step bit! _________________ Here's a change Robert.

Great idea for the uds but not enough time to round up the stuff. When he gets around to buying his own house in the next couple years I will help him build a bigger cooker. I will start checking out some of these ideas. Thanks for throwing them out here.

I could buy the j3 and a heavy duty umbrella to protect him from all the flying pigs. I like the looks of the smokey mountain. I think he could learn that and would take care of it. It should fit onto the patio and most of his roomies would leave it alone. I can't find anyone that carries it in stock though. I might have to order it online asap.

If I had to pick something that would meet all my needs and is built like a Tank it's a Weber 22.5 One touch bar-B-kettle. A silver model with a Chimney and a bag of charcoal and A bag of wood Chunks an oven thermo and a remote probe thermo,a roll of Hd foil and 2 bricks your at about 150.00 and be ready to grill or smoke most anything. _________________ Never met a cow that I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

Yeah, if he doesn't already have a grill, I'd recommend this too. I started out smoking on one and turned out some really good food once I got my process down. It wasn't really that hard. Weber kettles are relatively economical, durable, and you can cook darn near anything on them. _________________ Weber 22.5" Kettle

I still consider myself a newbie. My first smoker was a charcoal barrel unit that I would have to set my charcoal at one end and meat at the other. Very difficult to regulate heat etc.. For fathers day this year, my kids and wife got me a Smokin Pro w/side firebox, still maybe considered a starter smoker but boy is it easy to use and regulate heat. Fairly economical too, I think mine came in at around $170 + tax. Just about ready to try my first brisket in about an hour.

I also started with an el-cheapo offset - loved it - still have my 3rd one!! They may not be the most efficient or easiest to maintain a perfect temp - but they sure can put out some decent Q!! I know I will be getting both my son's one when they buy houses! _________________ Money Maker

I ordered the WSM today. They had the 18.5" for $299. It was more than his mother wanted to spend but I talked her into it. She probably didn't like the idea because the only way we get him to come over anymore is if I cook ribs for dinner. She probably doesn't want him to be able to feed himself because of that. I think he will enjoy feeding his friends as much as I do and spend more time at our house eating and learning new recipes. Thank you all for the input. This is a great website.
