Thank Catman, I though I was over being sick on Thursday but I woke up on Saturday running a fever and all the other fun stuff that goes along with it. I feel better today but still did not get much accomplished on the build. I did manage to get the firebox halfway welded back on a little bit ago but that took all the getup and go out of me. I am on vacation this week so this better not be how I end up spending it. I have a pit to build!!!

Thank you for the compliment and I am feeling a whole lot more like myself. I did manage to work on the rig yesterday and this afternoon. I will take some pictures in the morning after I pull it out of the shop a little bit so I can work on it. I think everyone will like the progress. Smile

Here are the pictures showing the progress so far.

Firebox is reattached at the new position. So much better. Very Happy

A side view showing the new height and the work in progress of framing out the flat doors on the big pit.

The doors on the big pit were not in bad shape at all but I decided to make them match the doors on the other pit. Very Happy

Gary, that is going to be one fine rig when your done. Surely some extra work on the 2nd cooker getting the doors framed out to match, but I personally think its well worth it. Your attention to detail is awesome. Looking forward to seeing what you get done next Very Happy

Thoughts??? I built the frames for the pit doors out of 1"x1/4" angle iron. Should I skin them with 1/4" or 1/8" plate? I just wonder if I skin them out of 1/4" if that would make them hard to open. I am going to counter weight them but there also becomes a point when the door just weighs too much. I keep going back an forth in my head so I though why not ask...

Gary, your project looks fantastic. Very Happy The outdoor pics really do her justice for what is going on here. Very nice work. Very Happy
To lighten up the doors the 1/8" would be great if you can keep it from distorting on you but that is going to be difficult if you weld out 100%. You may think about 3/16" as a skin.

Gary, a couple thoughts on the skins. Like Kevin said, you might have some distorting issues on the 1/8" material. A couple things maybe. (1) Could you add a piece of your angle you used for the frames in the center to add some rigidness for the skin when you welded it there? (2) Do you have access to anyone with a metal break, you can have them put a small cross break in the metal and that will keep them rigid, just would give them a different look you might not want. 4x8x1/8" is around 170lbs a sheet and 4x8x3/16th is around 240lbs a sheet. Not a lot of difference really and since your going with counter weights, it might not really matter the thickness. 4x8x1/4" is 325lbs, so the weight will start adding up quick with that. Myself, I think the added brace on the door frame and the 1/8" material would be good. If your worried about it distorting real bad when you weld it, you could always take the girly route and rivet the skin on like some do...well, one does anyway Shocked Laughing

I agree that 1/4" plate would be a little heavy and I do not have any 3/16" plate. I was looking at the numbers and in just the plate for the largest door, 1/4" would be 51lbs, 3/16" would be 39lbs, and 1/8" would be 28lbs. I believe 1/8" is going to be the winner. I had not thought about the distortion welding it up as I have been using it as the outer skin on the firebox and vertical smoker without a problem. I will in the case of the doors, add a couple of pieces of 1/4" flat bar and that should help control the distortion.

Thank you!! I just needed to hear someones thoughts besides my own sometimes. Very Happy

I guess you can kind of call this related. I had some concerns about the truck I had being able to tow the BBQ rig once it was complete so I made a modification to what truck I have yesterday. Do not think this one is going to have any issues what so ever. Very Happy

Thanks!! I have really been enjoying driving it this week. It is the first diesel truck I have owned and I am amazed at how much power it has.

This last weekend and this week I have been on-call so I did not get much done on my build. I did manage to get all the doors installed on the pits though. I had to work one of the doors over a little bit with a chain and a hammer as it was twisted but it came around. Smile This week I cutout the frames for the cooking grates on the smaller pit and the vertical smoker. I also have the joints prepped on the grate frames to be welded which I will do this evening. This weekend I plan on welding the doors together for the fireboxes and the vertical smoker and get them mounted, they are already cut out.

More pictures to come over the weekend.

Gary

Note to self.
When you are mounting the doors on the firebox, pay attention to how you mount the hinges. If you do not the door will just fall off when you finish welding the hinges on. Do not ask me how I know..... Dang it!!!! Break out the grinder and the cutting wheel and try it again. I know I should not try to do stuff like that when I get tired.

Hey Gary...take note of the method called "trapped" on the right side of the drawing. No particular reason...just an FYI Wink
