Would you believe me if I told you that an double walled insulated vertical smoker is heavy? I knew it weighed something with me wrestling it around the shop the last 2 days. I went to put it on the trailer with some of those clamp-on forks attached to the front-end loader. It lifted it fine when the vertical was only a single wall but it had a hard time lifting it high enough now that it is double walled. I did get it in place and tacked to the pit after some effort. It looks really good attached to the pit too.
I will take some pictures tomorrow evening after work. I am just too tired to even think about walking out there with a camera right now.

Gary, you really need to get the Mrs. involved in this build. She can take the pics, upload said pics to the PC then as your sipping your drink edit them to what you want. Then let the Mrs. load them to photobucket. Debbie takes much better pics than I do. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Kevin, That would is a great idea and when you see one that would fit the bill then please send her over. It would be really good if someone besides the dog was around in the event I get in a bind or something falls on me. I have a bad habit of not even taking a cell phone with me in the shop.

Looking forward to updates. |

I have not done anything about as of yet but I will be cutting it off an raising it up. I just have not had the time to touch it yet and I also wanted to make a little forward progress before I tackled the firebox again.
Thank you for the complements everyone!!

Spent some time trying to cut the firebox off of the big pit. I do not know who welded that thing on but they must not have meant for it to come off easy. At least I know I do not have to be concerned about any of my welds breaking on that thing I guess. I thought I cut the welds all the way around it but I only have it to the point of sagging a little. Looks like it is going to take a few more hours of work to get it off. Nothing a little determination and a torch will not solve.

Kevin, that is all I needed as the firebox is off. I have also re-cut the pit to move it up 4 inches and removed the outer skin off of the top of the firebox. Now need to remove the skin off of the backside and then it is time to refit and put it all back together. _________________ 3rd Coast Smoke |

garyeng, right on! hope you figure it was worth the trouble. As k.a.m. mentioned...you built it to last and the heights that were troubling you would nag you, even if ever so slightly, for the life of the pit. Ready to see some pics, refit and the carnage in between. _________________ Backyarder

Here are some pictures of today's progress or something like it anyways.
The vertical all welded up to include the additional support legs. I did not originally plan to add the legs but though they could not hurt either.
The pit opening raised 4 inches
Different angle of the new pit opening
Firebox with the top and back outer skin and insulation remove.
Test fitting the firebox
Bending the frame to support the out skin on the top
From inside the pit looking at the new position of the firebox.
Tomorrow I should finish fitting the frame to support the outer skin and then reattach the skin and insulation. If time then allows, I will reattach the firebox to the pit.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement!!
I managed to get the insulation and the outer skin welded back on but that is as far as I got today. When I had the skin all welded back on and ground it was time for dinner. It is veterans day after all and I am one of those so I knocked off early.
This week sometime I will get the firebox back on and start moving forward again. It has been quite a bit of work but I am glad I decided to fix it or it would have bugged me for now on.

Gary, your moving right along now. Never fun to take steps back, but you have done a bang up job getting it back where it belongs. I dont think the extra legs on the verticle is a bad idea at all. It will sure take alot of stress off of everything. Keep up the great work and keep the updates and pics coming _________________ X2 Finished Build

garyeng,
Your build is looking great one day fingers crossed I will Build a competition trailer.
I saw a roller in one of your pictures and was wondering what kind/model and what you thought of it. Are you able to to square, round and flat stock with it?
Thanks for the info |

Troy, Yep, feels good to move in the right direction and I think it is going to workout well.
Jon, Thank you for the complements. This project was something that I had been planning build for about 3 years before I started it. There have been plenty of challenges along the way but it has really been a fun project. The roller you saw is one made by harbor freight and I also bought the dies for square tubing. I have mainly used it for 1"x1/4" flat bar, I have rolled the flat bar both the easy and hard ways and it does it without a problem. I normally am not a big fan of HF tools, I hate them, but this one is a keeper.
I had hoped to have the firebox welded back on by today but I started losing my voice Saturday evening and I thought it was just from all the cutting and grinding. I still do not have my voice back all the way today and I ended up coming home early from work today not feeling well and I never do that. Hopefully today was the worst of it and I can get back at it tomorrow or the next day.At least now I know it is not from working on the pit this weekend. I do have all of next week off so I should get a few things done then. I hate being sick... _________________ 3rd Coast Smoke |
