Because of the contact with food, I would hesitate to use any chemical cleanser on the oxidized chrome surface.
However, you may simply try using steel wool (000 or, better yet, 0000) to rub off the oxidation that has occurred. Guys use it all the time for oxidation on their chromed auto parts.
Just requires a bit of elbow grease.
Consider it your penance for your mistake.

are you sure its chromed? Sounds like polished aluminum to me, and that's a normal reaction of bare cast aluminum to dish washer detergent.
Polish it up and it should be as good as new. _________________ Bud

Yep, I never put my uncoated aluminum in the dishwasher after having the same thing happen to me with broiling plates. I would use a buffer wheel on a drill. Trying to do it by hand with pitting is just not worth the effort. _________________ Pat

It really depends on how deep the pitting is. I would start with a medium compound and see how that is working... _________________ Pat

Then just a mild polishing compound. You could try hand rubbing it, but I am just too lazy for that. _________________ Pat
