Well , I decided I needed a better themometer than I have been using , the other day I cooked chicken and my "instant read" was all over the place , it appeared as though the chicken was done , that is , until i cut into it , still raw'ish... I decided right then and there that I needed a Thermapen... of course I wanted the fastest color so I went with Red.... based on Physics , see below....

"Light travels at a constant speed in vaccum... 3 x 10^8 m/s...
But in media like air, glass, different wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum travel at different speeds.
Refractive Index n is inversely proportional to wavelength of light.
But refractive index = Speed of light in Vaccum/Speed of light in medium
Hence, speed of light in media is directly proportional to wavelength...
Since wavelength increases from Violet to Red,
Red travels the fastest...
Violet travels the slowest..."

So , as you can see Red is the fastest Very Happy Very Happy

You fell for the oldest trick in the themometer business and purchased the slowest thermapen. Thermapen tests all their themometers before they determine what color they are going to be. The fastest ones are painted a mundane color like my blue one:

The slowest ones are painted flashy colors to get newbies to come in wanting flare so their slowest product actually flies off the shelf. It's the same thing they do with corvettes...they paint the slowest ones red to make them look like they are going fast. Man I wished you had asked a professional and I would have let you in on the secret. Razz

Hmmm the shorter wavelengths of the ultraviolet are much more energetic and are actually faster and more powerful than the slow and plodding infrared spectrum. That said Red may go longer but it definitely does not go faster. Wavelength speed is actually determined by its energetic state.

Thus...

Is the fastest!

Don't let my fellow ringers mislead you. Red is the fastest color. you got a good one.

There are many mods you can do to enhance the therma pen, such as putting in an aftermarket chip. But most folks will just upgrade with some decent racing quality batteries and waxing the probe. If you want some tips, just let me know. I've modded out my 2010 Red Thermapen and honeslty have seen a solid 20% increase.

Good luck!

The BEST mod you can do for the Red Thermo is paint it Thermopen Green. THEN you have the fastest. That and a simulated carbon fiber wrist strap and a V-Tech or Nismo sticker on the back you will hardly be able to hold on to it.

Rose tinted are both the fastest and the slowest!

They are the fastest to bring memories to your mind, and then the slowest as you pause to feel all warm and fuzzy!

One day I'm going to turn every answer on any thermopen question to Pink, cause the Pink ones are not only the fastest, but also to show that you are secure in your machismo at the same time, great twofor!

Chicken is done when the thigh wiggles easily in the joint, no Thermapen needed. Flip every 30minutes and check the thighs after the first 1.30 depending on the size of the chix. The only thing I use a thermometer on is sirloin tip roasts and rib roasts, everything else is by feel. One exception is large turkey's, for Christmas and Thanksgiving - I push the probe into the breast then back off a 1/4" to make sure the breast is fully cooked.

Yup. my cousin had one. Every time he tried to use it his pork butt would falloff the grill and slam into the wall. Strange.
