Yellow mustard, Kosher(or other course ground)salt, Fresh cracked black pepper and a little garlic works great.

I don't like using sugar in my brisket or pork shoulder rub as they tend to bitter with the extended cooking time.

Let the smoke do the rest! Smile

I use mostly salt and fresh black pepper. Then add some paprika, chili powder, onion powder, yellow mustard powder, and celery seeds.

Don't bother with mustard, I don't know why people always do this. You don't taste it and it minimally helps the bark. I experiment with commercially prepared rubs and noticed that the ones I like have similar ingredients, in no specific order.

Salt
Pepper
Paprika
Garlic powder
Onion powder

You can add other things to make it your own:
Cumin
Cayenne
Spices
