thanks maniac, itchin ta burn, i keep sayin won't be long but i keep finding more to do. lol. today i'm working on the plate for under the grill above the firebox. well that and cookin a yardbird in a most un-conventional way lol.
and it aint too bad workin on 2 at once. he's usually only around saturday and sunday evening, so we go nuts on his then and thru the week i work mostly on mine.
daddywoofdawg, k.a.m. might be the best to ask, mine is only a sincere form of flattery lol.....i steeled his design, lol. but what i did was mock up with cardboard then cut with plasma, lots of grinding if it aint quite right. but as long as your cardboard is real close you should come real close with steel.

hmmm now what have we here??? looks like a plate.
it is a plate!!! must belong somewhere......
hey look it fits!!! after a bunch of freakin grinding and then ohhh yaaahhh i forgot the name of my q......battle of the bulge. the end of the propane tank was smaller than where the plate had to sit!!! so after all that grinding and fitting to get it in.....plunk!! right to the bottom. piece of angle against the cooker wall fixed it up and removed alot of gap that would have needed filling.
annnd here's another mystery.....looks mysteriously like the bottom end of that propane tank...hmmmmm
makes such a good lil grill a dadgummed yardbird just hopped up on there all rubbed n ready!!!
aaahhhh but the wind had its way round here today and could not get any temps goin wind breaks and all....hmmm what to do???
wife has the bird back inna house gettin the oven ready....i of course went back to grinding......hey wait a second...what if i....... yehhhh that just might work!!!
now where did that dadgummed bird fly off to???
heeheehee well he aint usin it yet.......
now we're cookin bayyybeee!!!
and this my friends is where any good n proper sauce should come from.....the heart and whatever it desires for flavour today. which in this case was a sweet n sticky rum based not even enough tang to bite my wife sauce. she loved it!!! (i like more heat myself)
yummmm fourth basting...
soooo close to ready it aint funny.....just one more basting.....
ohhhh crap!!! well dinner is done it was too good to snap anymore pix of lol but i tell ya it was sweet!!!

Darryl, another fine looking meal right there my Friend.
Your making some mighty fine progress on your project. I look forward to seeing some more pics and updates.
DFW, lay out a circle of the circumference of your vessel. Then add the straight edge angle of your door face to the outer edge of the curve accounting for the depth of the mounting surface (total height of door is needed). Once this is done add the connecting lines to finish the upper and lower caps. I used a curved bottom which complicated my fit.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Darryl...you crazy #*#)@! There are many, many other things that you could have chosen to borrow before this. You chose a good-un but... Looks like a darn nice job on it so far! Good luck with that. " Never again"- Wreckless _________________ Backyarder

hey thanks kevin, means alot to a rookie weldor like me lol. and yup that bird was tasty with corn onna cob.
wreckless, lmao thanks bud, ya made my day. it was a wee bit o' work but i like the result. loved it the first time i saw kevin's done this way (much better than mine btw). so i had to shteel this one. i haven't cut the firebox door yet, been pondering end facing, slightly facing the front, built out like the cooker door, built out with a 1/2 inch plate i have i can use as a door.
so i went on to making some hinges.....was workin on number 1 when buddy showed up on friday to work, so i cut out the pieces fer number 2, (cuz 1 looked sweet) then finished em off yesterday just before he showed.
turned out not too bad i figger....for a cook's handiwork lol don't mind my warped goofy azz door lol rooki mistake as usual waaaay too much heat at a time. it balances out tho....i keep makin the mistakes but i stop my buddy from doin the same thing lol.
thats it fer now, mebbe get some more done tonight.....

well kevin, i couldn't leave well enough alone after dinner, so i went out an built the frame for the door, tacked it up and clamped the door on for a first lil looksee.
and ya know what???
I BLOODY LIKE IT!!! lol
me wife brought coffee as i was gettin set to tack. after clampin the door up there, i drank my coffee and stared at it. couldn't take my freakin eyes off it. went from cuttin that opening on sunday night to this tonight, with no work done yesterday at all cuz we went to the big city. and all morning today we were tilling the garden and planting stuff. so not bad at all for about 8 hours of figgerin, plannin, measurin, cuttin, fittin, tackin, cookin, weldin an lovin!!! |

I'm thinking...
A) you haven't fully realized from the first one what a PITA those doors are to actually do it again
B) That you are not completely done with the first one and have not fully realized what a PITA those doors are to actually do it again
or
C) That you are having some success and a lot of fun with them and that they look pretty darn sharp!
I'm going with "C" for now. Keep it that way! _________________ Backyarder

so here is today's wee lil update!!!
now mind the fact it aint purdied up like yer sisters yet......
sides on....
and the top plate just went on about 20 minutes ago, well tacked and gaps filled anyways, but that there 3/8 got hot!!
well that is all for today.....sucks when life gets in the way of fun don't it? lol

busy week......unfortunately not in my garage
but i got out fer a bit tonight. cut the last plate for under the fb doorway.
here's some creative welding positioning, lol.
but, i gotta say i am pleased with myself for how that vertical sloped on a curve weld came out. too bad noone will ever see it, lol. it's on the bottom!!!
and finally the doorway is boxed in!!! top edge is done with the grinder here. i like my corners rounded a bit. goes back to a really old art class, "it is harder to draw a straight line than it is to sketch a straight line." easier to see faults that is.
that is all for now folks!!!

wow i guess its been awhile since an update here. life gets in the way, you do a lil bit here n there, almost get doe, start cookin, forget to post updates. lol ya'll know what i mean.
anways, i think i forgot to get some pix along the way, but here's some of what i got.
air intake under the firebox...kinda unique, rotates freely.
firebox latch...
kinda an overall shot shows the fb door, intake, and chimney...
itty bitty first burn with no door seals yet, held about 230 for 2 hours or so......looks promising...
wow lookit the smoke pour outta me doors lol...but somehow held ok temps...
since then, i have added seals(no pix) cooked a few times heres one cook...
fergot to take pix til i was down to cutting the last rack.....oops hungreeee...
one style with cracked pcorn/tequila sauce...
and for the wife...finished with just a glazing of maple apple cider.....
well as for now, still unfinished and no paint(the life thing) having a bit of a q party for about 15-20 friends...starts lie this on wed marinating my beef for pulled beef...
bout 10 lbs of sirloin...
wee bit o seasonin...
some ummmm questionable booze....(as to process not quality hic hic)
olive oil not picced but heres the result...
won't see air til i rub it and put it on the cooker friday night for saturday...
also doing a bunch of st louis ribs, chicken thighs, baked beans, slaw and tater salad...annnd a play on a german dish (rouladen) but done with costcos mild italian sausages gave it the first try in a pan wed night....
results....after tasting ive decided it is definately missing the mustard, so i have since made a tequila honey mustard spray to hit it with on the cooker, but otherwise delicious.....
thats it for now folks... i have used it a few times, works great albeit has a few tiny leaks, and needs a positive cooker door latch in the same fashion i did the fb latch, but no time right now fer that. and needs a final clean either flaps or blasting and paint. oh and one freakin tire has a persistant leak. bugger.would also like to do a work surface in front under the cooker door, but time and materials have not been my friend as of late.
have at er' lemme know what ya'll think. will post pix of this weekends cook afterwards....should be a goodun!!!

Cooker looks awesome, Darryl! Very nice work!
The grub that it's been churning out looks delicious, too!
I'm curious to see how that sirloin tip roast turns out.
I have seen them at Costco, but have yet to purchase one. _________________ "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

Darryl, still wondering about some leaks from those doors, it's the design my friend, not your work. Sounds like you are still planning on approaching that tho. For uniqueness, fit up, etc...A+ it just plain looks good. _________________ Backyarder
