My girl is tired of hearing me complain about my cooker and has offered to pay half of any replacement smoker of my choosing. Soooo, I like ease of the Traeger just can't get the flavor i want. I was thinking about a BDS, DP offset, or a Stumps. What do you guys think? I already own a trailer so hauling won't be a problem. I don't really want to babysit the smoker the whole time so I'm not really sure about a stick burner, but I like the flavor they add to the food. Any opinions? I am personally leaning toward the Stumps GF223.

The Stumps is on my wish list.
Go with that one.

You know my vote. It is also easier to keep a Stumps nice as you just roll it in and out of the Garage, Shed, or Car Port. The others are all fine products though.

Merry Christmas Flex, sounds like you got a great gal there!
I'm partial to stick burners, so the DP would be my choice. Plus that they can do larger cooks like pig roasts, and are a good value for the money. With the proceeds from selling the Traeger, you will be part way there! _________________ BBQMAN

My girl just informed me last night that I also have to convince her that the one I pick is the best one for my needs. I paid over $2,000 for the Traeger and i had to have it.....etc, etc and now I want something new! You know how it goes! So she isn't going to believe everything I say this time and this is going to be tough since I haven't actually sampled any Q from any of them. Anybody in Norther California have a Stumps they would like to demo for me?

I'd go for the Stumps. Definately on my wish list.

Well you really have to ask yourself what you are going to use it for. I personally like the DP but the stumps would be great also. _________________ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaeloberry |

Flex I agree with Alien. Personaly I own a DP 60 and love it. Also if you have the right toys (stoker w/ 2,5 fans) it makes babysetting much easier plus you get alot for not soo much money and the coolness factor. Every where we have went, comps, jobs, concessions we have drawn larger crowds to talk about the smoker than anyone else. It is unique in styling and it smokes realy well. I'm happy. I am also thinking about getting a Stumps or Backwoods smoker to play around with. We are also talking about adding a fat 50 or another 60 to the fleet as well. So for what it is worth I'd go with the DP but it depends on what you want it for. _________________ If it ain't barbeque, it ain't worth eat'n!

I think I'd have to throw my vote toward the Stump. Based on your comment of wanting something you don't have to tend to very often, that's exactly why I'm going to build a Stumper clone (I would love to just buy one, but the finances just don't seem to see it that way). I have seen the DP and even helped with a cook on one. It was a very nit pit with plenty of room but there was still fire tending that had to be done every 30-60 minutes and minor tweaks on the dampers to maintain the constant temp.
But I guess that's why I have two electric ECBs, for the "no hassle with fire" issue. I want to spend my time tending to the meat, not the heat. But the electric ECBs aren't legal for competing, they are way too small and you can't adjust the temperature if needed (like when its cold outside). _________________ Steve

SStory what model did you use, and how new was it because every 30-60 min is pretty extreme. We have a 60 series and we don't have to do any "tending" for well over an hour. We also have a stoker with duel blowers which means we do not have to tend for a long while it takes care of messing with the dampers. True you do have to tend to it more than a stumps but thats what you get with a stick burner that's half the fun. _________________ If it ain't barbeque, it ain't worth eat'n!

It was a Fat50. I was helping KeriC (from this forum) and her husband. Keri had a few modifications added to her Fat50 when she ordered it from Travis. You can search here for a few threads where she explains the "pig snouts" that she had additional dampers added (to adjust the temp from side to side in the main cooking chamber).
I think we had to tend to the fire a little more often because we were maintaining a relatively small fire for the chicken parts we were cooking, along with some beans and some sausage. Keri could probably answer more detailed questions since this was the only cook I've done on a DP. But she seems very happy with it, although for this cook, she still used her WSMs for the pork butts for an overnight cook the night before. _________________ Steve

Well, I thought I would jump in for my first post and give my 2 cents worth. First like Flex, I got a certificate from my wife to the Teddy Bear's BBQ class, but here in Phoenix, AZ. It was actually my B-day Present in September.
It goes with the new Stump's GF 222 CM that is sitting on my Patio. That was my Christmas Present from my baby. The Stump now compliments my #7 Kamado. Man it that thing big, but fun to use. So if I were wishing, I would go with the Stump's.
I Did the X-Mas Eve ABT's, four Salami's, two Fatties and the Christmas Day Rib Roast on My Stump's.
I am now thinking of a Stoker to keep both my toys going all night. The Funny thing is flex, that I moved from San Jose last year or I would have invited you over. I lived in SJ 36 Years.
Happy New Year to all. |

How did the Rib Roast come out in the Stumps? Did it have a smokey flavor? I need to find someone local around here so i can check one out.
Would have been nice to share some Q with you and attend the class together.

Hey Flex,
The roast came out good, I should have taken it off at 120 instead of 125. It was nice and pink, but I like the center a little more rare. Oh well, it was tasty. I dry aged it for 6 days, used a wet mustard rub and I cooked it at 300 degrees. I only use a fist size chunk of Pistachio wood for the smoke flavor and there was a little smokering, but I think it could have had a little more smoke.
The only thing I am getting used to, is the longer temp ramp up time for the stumps. My Kamado I can get it up to temp very fast (sometime too fast and over shoot the goal) and the stump takes about an hour to rise into the 225-250 range. You can increase the fire by leaving open the doors, but I am not in that big of a hurry. I pull a draft from my keggerator (another gift from my wife ) and enjoy the process.
I did try my first overnight cook of two butts and a brisket, but somewhere over the night I lost control and the temp rose to 350. The butts surrived (A little dry and will be used as a base for tamales), but the brisket was carbon. Live and learn. I think the wind picked up overnight and was blowing straight into the valve and that caused the temp rise. The thing was chugging along at 220 for six straight hours before I went to bed. The Stoker should eliminate any of those future issues and I can use it on my Kamado.
PS - Where in the Bay Area do you call home??? |

From what I have heard, that Stoker should decrease the time it takes the Stump to get up to temp. If it takes you an hour now, I would think 20 minutes would be all it needs with the use of the Stoker (based on other comments I've read).
I'll be adding a Stoker at some point as well. _________________ Steve
